Egon Matzner

Egon Matzner (born March 2, 1938 in Klagenfurt ; † September 15, 2003 in Vienna ) was an Austrian economist and financial scientist .

Life

After studying economics in Vienna , Linz and Stockholm (with Gunnar Myrdal ), he was Director of the Local Science Documentation Center from 1969 to 1972 and Professor of Public Finance at the Vienna University of Technology from 1972 to 1998 . From 1983 to 1989 he was director of the Social Research Center in Berlin and from 1992 to 1995 he was dean of the Faculty for Spatial Planning and Architecture . From 1992 to 1998 Matzner was head of the research center for socio-economics at the Austrian Academy of Sciences , and since 1998 a fellow at the Max Weber College at the University of Erfurt . He was a visiting fellow at the Center for European Studies Szombathely / Steinamanger ( Hungary ) and a visiting professor at the Institute for European Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver ( Canada ). Matzner worked as an economic and financial advisor to the Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky , advisor to UNCTAD , Geneva and the OECD , Paris .

Matzner was a left-wing, Keynesian- oriented economist and was critical of neoliberal economic policy. In the last years of his life he was particularly concerned with questions of globalization . For him, the theoretical analysis, the interdisciplinary orientation, the teaching and political activity formed a closely linked relationship.

His wife was the diplomat, writer and painter Gabriele Matzner-Holzer . Egon Matzner was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
