Cashback is the title of a 2006 British film directed by Sean Ellis . The film was implemented as a short film with the same actors and crew members in 2004 with a similar content. The producer in both cases is Lene Bausager, with Sean Biggerstaff and Emilia Fox playing the main roles .

action

After a painful breakup with his first girlfriend Suzy, Ben, an aspiring painter, suffers from severe sleep disorders. To distract his mind, he starts working the night shift at a Sainsbury's branch . There he meets his colleague Sharon and finally falls in love with her.

Ben imagines how to stop time and walk around in this frozen time. He undresses the “frozen” supermarket customers in order to draw them. In retrospect, Ben explains that he has always been fascinated by the beauty of female bodies.

At a birthday party, Ben meets Suzy again, who now wants to start a relationship with him again and kisses him. Ben refuses, but Sharon has seen them and leaves the party angrily.

When Ben got the opportunity to exhibit his drawings in a gallery, Sharon also received an invitation to the opening (on November 31st [sic!]). She is impressed by the many portraits he has made of her. Ben shares his ability to stop time with her and they step outside together into a snowfall frozen in time.

Trivia

At a soccer game against the team from another Sainsbury's supermarket, store manager Jenkins quoted Russell Crowe from the film Gladiator . He compares himself to the film character who, as a gladiator, leads the slaves (in this case his employees) into the arena. The passage “what we do in life, echoes through eternity”, taken almost unchanged in the original English version from Gladiator, has been re-translated for Cashback. While a free translation was chosen for the German version of Gladiator with "in eternity your deeds will be remembered", it became "[...] will echo in eternity" in Cashback. Since Jenkins mentions Gladiator directly, this can lead to irritation for the German audience, as this translation differs greatly from the translation of Gladiator.

publication

The film was released by Gaumont in late 2006 . The North American premiere was on September 10, 2006 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The DVD was released in Germany on March 10, 2008.

reception

criticism

The film was largely well received, wrote Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times : “The film is as lightweight as it should be. It doesn't seem overloaded at any point. ” Hollywood Reporter's Sheri Linden praised the film for its“ feel for both the cinematic and the verbal ”, which raised the film to“ a decent comedy about growing up with little content ”. While Justin Chang from the industry journal Variety also rated the film positively with the attributes "skillfully charming, elegantly erotic and with the highest level of sophistication in the direction", there are also critical voices. Matt Zoller Seitz of the New York Times thinks that one should avoid films in which protagonists are more sensitive than their friends. The result is a "worn out film like cashback ."
