Courtney Melba Barnett (born November 3, 1988 in Sydney ) is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist of alternative rock .

Life

Courtney Barnett grew up in Mona Vale in the north of Sydney as the daughter of a ballet dancer and stage manager . She initially aspired to a career as a tennis player , but turned to art and music at the age of 16. She studied drawing and photography in Tasmania , but dropped out after two years. Barnett then worked as a guitarist in various bands in Melbourne . Together with her musician friend Jen Cloher, she finally founded her own indie label Milk! , based in the Moreland City neighborhood of Melbourne. The label is continuously very productive, relocating Loose Tooth , The Finks and Fraser A. Gorman with several albums each and of course the albums of the two founders, often on vinyl as well as CDs.

Barnett pioneered other Australian musicians by frequently incorporating bands she liked as opening acts on their international tours. On her indie label Milk! Records , she not only releases her own albums, but also a large number of talented newcomers and musician colleagues. She mostly does the artwork for her albums / CD covers herself anyway. Even her Twitter and Instagram postings show her consistently as an imaginative illustrator.

Courtney Barnett mentions Patti Smith and Nirvana as influences on her music . Spex magazine also compared her singing style and lyrics to Lou Reed , Bob Dylan and Lily Allen . With her EPs I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris and How to Carve a Carrot into a Rose , Barnett was initially successful in Australia from 2012, before finding a larger audience abroad. She has performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , the Transmusicales Festival in Rennes and the Glastonbury Festival, among others .

On March 20, 2015, Courtney Barnett released her debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit , which reached number 4 in the Australian charts and number 20 in the US charts . The album was largely positively received by the critics; the portal allmusic awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars, Pitchfork Media 8.6 out of 10 points, and the Guardian awarded the album the maximum number of five stars.

On zeit.de, Thomas Winkler praised Barnett's witty and serious approach to everyday issues, while Jan Wiele in the online edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung emphasized the successful handling of the tradition of grunge and folk . In 2016, Barnett was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Artist category.

She regularly invites talented young musicians who have gone beyond the local level with their first albums as opening act for their intercontinental tours abroad. On June 9, 2018, she made a guest appearance with Waxahatchee at the Bataclan in Paris during her European tour . In February and the beginning of March 2019 she toured the big cities of Central and South America, in order to honor some metropolises in Japan with Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.
