Kurt Samuel Vile (born January 3, 1980 in Lansdowne , Pennsylvania ) is an American guitarist , singer and songwriter from Philadelphia .

Career

Vile is a founding member of the Philadelphia band The War on Drugs , from which he left in late 2008 to focus on his solo career. Since then he has released seven studio albums and several EPs. He is currently under contract with Matador Records .

Viles music can be roughly classified as indie rock with roots rock , folk and lo-fi influences and is also often compared to Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young . He became known to a wider audience with his fourth album Smoke Ring for My Halo (2011), which received overwhelmingly positive reviews, as did the following albums Wakin On A Pretty Daze (2013) and B'lieve I'm Goin Down (2015). among others from the music website Pitchfork . The single Pretty Pimpin became Viles' first hit on the Billbord charts in July 2015. In 2017 he released the album Lotta Sea Lice as a collaboration with the Australian musician Courtney Barnett . His seventh solo album Bottle It In followed in 2018 , which again met with a largely positive response from the critics. When performing live, Kurt Vile is supported by the band The Violators.
