The Shining was a British musical group that only existed for about three years. She named herself after the book of the same name by Stephen King and played melodic rock and noisy Britpop .

history

founding

The band was first announced as a new supergroup in 1999, as it was formed from former members of the bands The Stone Roses , The Verve and the Seahorses .

John Squire (ex-The Stone Roses) and Simon Jones (ex-The Verve) had launched a new project in 1999, which was initially called Reluctance and which should create a musical continuation for both after the breakup of the respective opening act. Squire brought along Seahorses member Mark Heaney as a drummer . With Duncan Baxter, a young, hitherto unknown singer was hired, who with his extraordinary charisma, facial expressions and figure is reminiscent of the young Freddie Mercury . Vocally, he ties in with Def Leppard and the A-Northern-Soul times of The Verve.

True Skies

After a long trial period and little creative results, John Squire left the field in the summer of 2000 and the project threatened to collapse. But finally Simon Tong (also formerly The Verve) and Dan MacBean could be hired as new forces for the guitar . The two Simons were eventually the main songwriters and the first album could be recorded. With Quicksilver / Dum Dum , the first single was released via Zuma Recordings in April 2002 . For the album the distribution of Sony Music could be won. True Skies was released in September of the same year and was at least a respectable success with the rock hit single Young Again (including trailer soundtrack on ProSieben ).

After the European tour in 2002 the band split up for a variety of reasons. For one thing, Epic / Sony did not renew their record deal. Simon Tong accepted the offer to replace Graham Coxon at Blur and Dan MacBean made his second band, the Engineers, the main band. The Verve was also a very high standard of comparison and Simon Jones had often got involved in the teasing questions of the press regarding Richard Ashcroft (the ex-front man of The Verve). There remain three singles and one album .

After that

Simon Jones joined Cathy Davey as bassist in 2004 and keeps away from the mass media and the public . Simon Tong supported Blur in 2003 as a live guitarist on their "Think Tank" tour, in 2004 and 2005 he recorded the album Demon Days of the Gorillaz as a guitarist and is now an official member of The Good, the Bad and the Queen . Lead guitarist Dan MacBean co-founded the band Engineers in 2003 , which released their debut album of the same name in 2005. Mark Heaney has worked with various musicians such as Badly Drawn Boy or Gang of Four since the breakup . a. again with Simon Jones. Baxter sang and played guitar in the previously unsigned indie band The Voluntary from 2003 to 2005 .

At the end of 2006, Mark Heaney, Simon Jones and Duncan Baxter rehearsed regularly with Jeff Wootton as the new guitarist, which led to rumors of an imminent reunion. Wootton is an exceptional British up-and-coming guitarist and member of the young formation The Black Marquee. In February 2007, the band held a casting for a new singer without Baxter. Steven Young was chosen as the front man of the formation, which however will run without The Shining reference, especially since the The Verve reunion, including Simon Jones, initially demands patience from the band.
