Under Byen [ ˌonˀɐ 'b̥yˀən ] is a Danish music group that was founded in 1995 by Katrine Stochholm and Henriette Sennenvaldt.

Under Byen ( Danish for "Under the City") is known for producing their own unorthodox take on rock music. They don't use guitars, instead their music is dominated by piano , cello , violin , electronically distorted singing saw , electronic organ, drums and percussion . Furthermore, elements of jazz or classical music appear again and again in their music, as well as elements of traditional Danish folk music. Another important part of the music is the poetic Danish lyrics performed by female voices.
Her debut album Kyst (Danish for coast) impressed many critics. The band was praised for creating their own style and sound. Their second album Det er mig der holder træerne sammen (2002) (Danish for "It is I who hold the trees together") received similar praise and became the band's figurehead. In 2004 it was also published abroad in Denmark.
In 2006 the band released the album Samme stof som stof ("The same stuff as stuff"), which once again stirred up the critics.
Although Under Byen is far from being a general success, a devoted fan base emerged after the release of the second album and through their intense live performances.
The influences on the music of Under Byen are very diverse. Henriette Sennenvaldt, the lead singer, is inspired by road traffic, according to a quote. If there is one subject that can be ascribed to Kyst , it is water and ports. Musical influences are very rarely used directly, but the band members have on several occasions expressed their preference for music by artists such as Stina Nordenstam , Björk , Tori Amos , Sigur Rós , Tom Waits , Mogwai , Mark Hollis and Talk Talk .
Under Byen was nominated for a Danish Grammy in 2000.
