Julia Shammas Holter (born December 18, 1984 in Los Angeles ) is an American indie electronic musician .

biography

Julia Holter grew up in a musical family. Her father was a guitarist and once played with Pete Seeger , among others . She graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a degree in electronic music and began her music career in 2008. In the first few years, a number of her songs appeared on samplers, and she also worked with various musicians on individual pieces, for example with Linda Perhacs . She put on two albums with songs and a live collection on CD-R .

Her first real album, called Tragedy , was released in 2011 on Leaving Records . In terms of content, the concept album dealt with the Greek tragedy Hippolytos by Euripides . The pop album with electronic and classical elements received critical acclaim, but was not a commercial success. The follow-up album Ekstasis a year later made it into the Heatseeker charts. In it she borrowed from Renaissance music.

The album Loud City Song , a reference to her hometown Los Angeles, marked a small breakthrough . Thematically, it dealt with the novella Gigi by Colette . For the first time, she had not recorded the album on her own, but also worked with other musicians. In the USA it was only enough for a Heatseeker placement, but it was quite successful in Europe and reached number 20 in the Norwegian and number 88 in the Swiss charts.

Their fourth album Have You in My Wilderness was then no longer carried by a certain concept, it went in the direction of Dream Pop and put the vocals more in the foreground. Holter was very successful internationally and was also able to place himself in the charts in Germany and Great Britain for the first time.
