Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning is a German independent rock band that was founded in Quakenbrück in 1986 and dissolved for the first time in 1992. In 2001 a first and in 2014 a second start-up took place.
history
The initiators were the Englishman Robert "Tijuana" Giddens, who had already made a name for himself as manager of DAF in England, the guitarist Heinz "Henry" Rebellius and the manager Gisbert Wegener. Before there was even a single song, the band's extraordinary name made the rounds - and the stories that surfaced about them in the press. Accordingly, the two musicians who gave themselves new names for this project - Bobby Tijuana and 'Big Dog' Doug LaTrine - were Americans from Tucson , Arizona , who had a difficult time in the USA because of their anti-American lyrics and therefore supposedly only were able to inspire a record company in Germany for their material. Willie Nelson personally is said to have thrown her out of a joint tour, according to the band's unusually lavish and full-bodied promo material. Stories that the German media were happy to record and pass on, and which gave the band a very good start. The very first tour, which took place in autumn, was almost sold out without a record even being released. As a band, Tijuana and LaTrine hired musicians from the Osnabrück scandal comedy troupe The Schoolchildren, and over time a band with equal rights grew out of this, in which the Osnabrück-based rock-influenced style was increasingly incorporated into the country music-influenced songs by Tijuana and LaTrine could bring in. The first sound carrier was released in early 1987 with the LP / CD "The Record that Took 300 Million Years to Make". The title was an idea of their first manager Gisbert Wegener. The record company was Happy Valley Records from Mick Franke from Osnabrück, who also produced the band. Over the next few years around 300 concerts followed, two tours through Texas, a sensational tour through the GDR in 1989 after an official invitation from the FDJ, as well as several LP and CD releases. Including the LP "Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning", which was to go down in history as the first cooperation between a GDR and FRG label. The GDR label was KPM Records, operated by the musicians of the City band , the BRD label Happy Valley Records.
One of the band's greatest successes - primarily in the German independent scene - was a homage to Nancy and Ronald Reagan , officially called Nancy & Ronnie in the White House , but internally passed with F *** ing in the White House . The cover version of the Led Zeppelin song Whole Lotta Love was also well known, slowing down the famous riff a lot and spicing it up with a dobro intro. The legendary "I'm an Asshole" T-shirt and their own bilingual fanzine, The Cactus News, are also very popular.
In 2001 there was a reunion for a CD release with partly new musicians and some concerts, including in the opening act for Tony Joe White. Before that, Tijuana, Rebellius and Praed had released a CD recorded under the name "Illegal Artists" in Austin (Texas) worldwide.
The style of Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning can be described as "independent with country touch" or vaguely as alternative country . The name of the band is based on a character from the television series Dallas .
Achim Färber and Deko Pellmann, the two drummers of Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning, were, or in the case of Pellmann: are, otherwise in the service of Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub , and Rebellius also has some on a CD by Boa Bass tracks recorded.
In 2009 Tijuana Giddens and Rebellius reunited to create the band "Artland Country Club". Her style of music appears to be even more roots-oriented, the sound is characterized by acoustic guitars, but also saxophone, marimba and percussion. In 2010 the "Artland Country Club" presented its self-developed Pedal Power System - a power generation system that uses four bicycles to generate the electrical energy the band needs for their performances.
2014 - 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall , which Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning experienced first hand in the ex- GDR - there is another reunion of the band, whose core consists of Robert "Tijuana" Giddens, Marcus Praed and Heinz " Henry "Rebellius insists.
