Dotan (real name Dotan Harpenau ; born October 26, 1986 in Jerusalem ) is a Dutch singer-songwriter . He achieved considerable commercial success in his home country and began his international career with his second album 7 Layers . His music is characterized as folk influenced pop music .

Life

Dotan was born in Jerusalem in 1986, his father was Israeli and his mother Dutch. After his parents separated, Dotan grew up with his mother in Amsterdam . He became fluent in Hebrew while visiting his father in Israel . As a teenager he taught himself to play the guitar . In the late 2000s he sent some demo recordings to various music producers , which eventually led to a contract with EMI . In 2010 he quit his job and finished his studies without a degree to devote himself to his career as a musician. His debut album Dream Parade was released in 2011 and reached number 55 on the Dutch album charts . With the single This Town , Dotan reached number 29 in the Nederlandse Top 40 .

To counteract his stage fright , Dotan decided to give small private concerts. He launched a corresponding call on his Facebook page and gave numerous concerts in private living rooms, on houseboats or on farms. He appeared in the opening act for Gavin DeGraw and Sinéad O'Connor and released his second album 7 Layers on Universal Music in early 2014 . This stayed in the Dutch album charts for 57 weeks before reaching number 1 in March 2015 . In May 2015 his record label released 7 Layers in Germany.

On April 14, 2018, the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant wrote that Dotan had used several dozen fake accounts for self-promotion . In addition to likes, these accounts also posted false anecdotes. They were supposedly used to troll other Dutch artists . The publication caused quite a stir in the Dutch media.
