Shimon Dotan
Shimon Dotan ( Hebrew שמעון דותן; * December 23, 1949 in Romania ) is an Israeli film director , film producer and screenwriter of Romanian origin.
life and work
Shimon Dotan was born in Romania in 1949, but came to Israel with his family in 1959, where he grew up in an agricultural cooperative. After five years of military service, he graduated from Tel Aviv University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and then started a career as a filmmaker. His student films had previously won the competition for Israel's best short film and a prize for best directorial work twice .
In the 1982 feature film Zlila Choseret (English title: Repeat Dive ), Dotan, who in addition to writing the script, also directed the first time, processed his experience as a member of an Israeli elite naval unit. His debut film was also extremely successful and received a total of three Israeli film awards in addition to critical acclaim. In addition, his work took part in the competition for the main prize at the international film festivals in Berlin and Chicago. After two more films with documentary character, he followed in 1986 with his multiple award-winning film drama The Little Lamb's Smile, based on a book by David Grossmann . The film, which is about relations between Israelis and Palestinians , won a Silver Bear at the 1986 Berlinale .
Dotan moved to Canada in the early 1990s and founded the film production company Cinequest Films in Montreal with his business partner Netaya Anbar in 1991 . After the first joint production, Infernal Fighter (1994), other films followed such as Coyote Run (1996) and Four Neuroses and One Death (1998). Since then he has worked primarily as a filmmaker in Canada and the United States.
