history

Foundation and Gorilla Manor

The group was formed in 2005 in Orange County , where musicians Kelcey Ayer, Ryan Hahn and Taylor Rice attended Tesoro High School , under the name Cavil at Rest . A year after the three musicians enrolled at the University of California in Los Angeles , two more musicians joined the band: bassist Andy Hamm and drummer Matt Frazier. In 2008 the band moved to Silver Lake , Los Angeles to work on their debut album.

Their debut album Gorilla Manor , which the musicians named after a house in Orange County where they had lived together for a long time, was first released in November 2009 in the UK . It was not until four months later, in February 2010, that the album was released in the United States via Frenchkiss Records . Gorilla Manor was funded out of pocket and recorded at Red Rockets Glare Studios by Raymond Richards. The album debuted at number 160 on the US album charts and stayed there for a total of two weeks.

The group reached the first media attention in 2009 after nine concerts at the SXSW in Austin , Texas completed. Her song Wide Eyes was used by the Australian Democrats in their campaigns for the Australian general election in 2010. In the same year the group played at the Haldern Pop Festival , the Isle of Wight Festival , the Southside and Hurricane Festival , and the Optimus Alive! and the T in the Park .

The local natives played many of their appearances in the USA together with colleagues from We Barbarians . In 2011 the group played their first European tour supporting Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and their first concert in Australia at St. Jerome's Laneway Festival . In March 2011 it was announced that bassist Andy Hamm had left the band. In 2012 he was represented by Nik Ewing initially as a session musician, and since October 2013 Ewing has been a permanent member of the band.

Hummingbird and the international breakthrough

At Lollapalooza , the group announced that they would like to release a new album. This is called Hummingbird and was released on January 29, 2013, like its predecessor via Frenchkiss Records . Aaron Dessner from the indie rock band The National was responsible as the producer . Hummingbird became a hit album in the United States and entered the national album charts at number 12. It was there for a total of three weeks. The album was also listed in the British charts . It reached the 58th place there. A popular song on the album is Mt. Washington , which made it onto the official soundtrack of the adventure video game Life Is Strange .

In 2013 an appearance at the T in the Park and the Glastonbury Festival followed . This performance took place as part of an extensive world tour that led through several countries in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia. The group played at several major festivals around the world, including the Melt! , the Fuji Rock Festival and the Pukkelpop . This concert tour started on May 15, 2013 in Sydney , Australia , and ended after 80 performances in Paris , France .

In August 2014, the band announced at a concert in Salt Lake City , Utah , which was part of the Twilight Concert Series , that they had already started work on their third album.

Music genre

Local natives play a classic variant of indie rock and folk pop , which is comparable to Arcade Fire , Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend . The music is also described as “multi-faceted indie pop ”, in which “powerful melodies meet innovative sound structures.” The music was also described as a “West Coast version of Grizzly Bear ”. The English edition of Rolling Stone also makes musical comparisons with Grizzly Bear or Fleet Foxes and describes the music as a mixture of "dazzling harmonies similar to CSNY and wide-spiral psychedelia".

The Guardian writes that the group is taking their musical direction on Hummingbird in a direction similar to that on their debut album Gorilla Manor . The melancholy passages come into their own through the ascending vocals of Kelcey Ayer. In the play Colombia Ayer deals with the death of his mother. The reviewer attributes a musical resemblance to Radiohead to this piece . The British Independent describes the music as a “mixture of two of the most successful music exports in this branch”, Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes, which, however, gives the group “little chance of a musical breakthrough”. The lyrics are written on a very personal level.
