Lubomyr Melnyk ( Ukrainian Любомир Мельник : born December 22, 1948 in Munich ) is a Ukrainian-Canadian composer and pianist .

Life

Melnyk was born in a refugee camp in Munich, where his parents had fled from Ukraine. In 1950 he moved with his family to Winnipeg , Canada , where he lived until 1969. He graduated from St. Paul's College with a degree in Latin and philosophy and attended an advanced course in philosophy at Queen's University in Kingston , Ontario in 1969/70 . From 1973 to 1975 he worked in Paris as a pianist and composer for dance theater groups, mainly in collaboration with Carolyn Carlson at the Paris Opera . He then returned to Canada. Today he lives in Sweden.

Melnyk has created over 120 works, mainly for piano solo, but also for piano and ensemble. He calls his music "Continuous Music" and wrote various treatises about it.

His compositions, which incorporate influences from late romantic music, minimal music , neoclassical and jazz , break new ground in many ways. As early as 1978, the New York city magazine Village Voice counted Melnyk's album KMH among the “10 albums you can't live without”.

In Europe he only became known a few years ago. He has been under contract with Sony since 2016 .
