Deerhoof is an American indie rock band formed in San Francisco in 1994 . The band is known for their unconventional musical structures and received a positive response from most of the critics.

history

In March 1994, drummer and keyboardist Greg Saunier and guitarist Rob Fisk formed the band. The founder of the Kill Rock Stars label , Slim Moon, signed the two in 1995. In the same year the singles Return Of The Wood M'Lady and For Those Of Us On Foot were released . In 1996, Satomi Matsuzaki, who had moved from Tokyo to San Francisco, joined them. Although she had no professional experience as a singer before, she was now responsible for the singing. Matsuzaki and Saunier later married.

In 1997 the first album, The Man, the King, the Girl was released . After the release of the second album Holdypaws , in which Matsuzaki also played bass for the first time, Rob Fisk and Kelly Goode left the band. The last one to take over the band's keyboard had only been added in February 1998. After the recording of the third album Halfbird , John Dieterich joined the band as guitarist, who, together with Greg Saunier, should also have guest parts on albums by the band Xiu Xiu . Halfbird was released in 2001.

The breakthrough came with the fourth record, Reveille , released in 2002 . In 2003, Chris Cohen joined as the second guitarist, who was also playing in his band The Curtains at the time. In 2006 he resigned. Three more albums followed between 2003 and 2005, Apple O ' , Milk Man and The Runners Four . While Apple O 'was made in just one afternoon, they wanted to produce a longer album with The Runners Four , which is why it is about twice as long as the previous albums. Even before the release of the eighth album, Friend Opportunity in 2007, the band had already made a name for itself. Reveile and Apple O ' were in Pitchfork Media's list of the best 100 albums from 2000 to 2004 . Friend Opportunity reached number fourteen on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart in just one week . Together with film music composer Ed Shearmur , the band, whose fans include Matt Groening and Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen Orzolek, worked on the soundtrack for the independent film Dedication, which premiered in 2007 .

style

Satomi Matsuzaki's singing is bright, fragile and crooked. Instrumentally, "shocking beats, piercing siren interludes, a guitar string that lands like a 10-tonne weight on a 20-tonne trampoline" determine Deerhoof's music . The band is often assigned to noise rock . On Friend Opportunity , progressive rock elegance would mix with folk elements and naive pop music , says Andreas Schnell in the intro .
