Yeasayer [ ˈjeɪˌseɪəɹ ] were an experimental American rock band from Brooklyn , New York, founded in 2006 . They themselves described their music as "Middle-Eastern-Psych-Pop-Snap-Gospel". On December 19, 2019, they announced their separation.

development

Singer Chris Keating and guitarist Anand Wilder are from Baltimore, where they made music together before they went to college. After both of them moved to New York a few years later, they founded the band Yeasayer in early 2006 together with Wilder's cousin Ira Wolf Tuton and the drummer Luke Fasano, who joined in May 2006. Soon after the band was founded, the first songs like 2080 were distributed on the Internet via Myspace .

The band first attracted major attention in the USA in March 2007 when they performed at the SXSW Festival.

The debut album All Hour Cymbals was released on October 23, 2007 in the USA and on November 16, 2007 in Europe on the specially founded label We Are Free .

music

style

Yeasayers mix music from different cultures. African tribal chants and other folklore borrowings can be found in their songs . They are compared with Talk Talk , David Byrne and the Talking Heads . You yourself name Leonard Cohen , Phil Collins , Cyndi Lauper and Prince as influences.

Instruments

Yeasayers appear in the classic rock band line-up of vocals / keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. According to their own statement, they compose their music on the computer. The choirs featured on the All Hour Cymbals album are contributed by the New York band Suckers .

Criticism

The music critic Thomas Weiland wrote " A neo-hippie commune that deals with psychedelia , world music , pop and electronic music at the same time and distills surprising songs from it has never existed like this before."
