Joan as Police Woman is the band project of the singer and violinist Joan Wasser (born July 26, 1970 in Biddeford , Maine ).

Joan Wasser is said to have chosen the name for the project because her acquaintances said she looked like Angie Dickinson ; this enjoyed great popularity as the leading actress in the television series Police Woman (German broadcast from 1988 on Sat.1 under the title Make-up and Pistols ) .

Style and collaboration with other artists

Joan Wasser is a classically trained violinist who studied with Yuri Mazurkevich and initially played in the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. She then switched to indie rock bands as a violinist, where she developed an aggressive style. She was friends with Jeff Buckley . After his death in 1997, she played for a while with musicians from Jeff Buckley's band under the band name Black Beetle . For her own band project she chose the stage name Joan as Police Woman , "so that the audience doesn't expect a solo violin concerto" . The singer and multi-instrumentalist plays the violin, guitar, piano and Wurlitzer. Joan as Police Woman can be classified stylistically as a songwriter soul . She herself describes her music as Punk Rock R&B or American Soul Music. She names Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone as role models . The Guardian called her the Dusty Springfield of indie pop . In addition to her previous bands The Lotus Eaters , The Dambuilders and Those Bastard Souls , Joan Wasser has in the past performed with musicians such as Lou Reed , Tanya Donelly , Sheryl Crow , Sparklehorse , Dave Gahan , Elton John , the Scissor Sisters , Joseph Arthur , the Guillemots , Rufus Wainwright and Antony and the Johnsons worked together live or in the studio.

Her debut EP Joan as Police Woman (2004) and her first album Real Life (2006) were released on Reveal Records .

In June 2008 their second album To Survive was released on Reveal Records and internationally on PIAS Recordings , with David Sylvian and Rufus Wainwright as guests. An album with cover versions under the title Cover was sold live and on its own website.

The following album, entitled The Deep Field , was released on PIAS Recordings in January 2011 . The album The Classic was released in March 2014. Two years later she published Let It Be You (on Reveal Records ) with Benjamin Lazar Davis . Another two years later the record Damned Devotion ( PIAS Recordings ). In 2019 a very extensive compilation of her previous work was published (with 41 songs on three CDs or as a download, again on the PIAS Recordings label ). It contains a retrospective with studio recordings on two CDs, the third CD consists of BBC live recordings. The last song of the studio recordings is a cover version of Prince ' Kiss , which appeared a year later on Cover Two (2020, PIAS / Sweet Police ) with additional cover versions.
