Nick Murphy (* 23. June 1988 in Melbourne ; full name Nicholas James Murphy ), formerly known as Chet Faker is an Australian Soul - singer .

Career

Nick Murphy studied at St Kevins College in Sydney . In 2012 he signed a contract with the music label Downtown . In October of that year he won the Breakthrough Artist of the Year and the Australian Independent Records Award . His debut album Thinking in Textures , released in early 2013 under the pseudonym Chet Faker , did not go beyond number 38. Nevertheless, he then won the Rolling Stone Australia Award in the Best Independent Release category .

At the end of 2012 he was already featured in the song Left Alone as a guest on the number one album by Australian DJ Harley Streten alias Flume . In the fall of 2013 they recorded the EP Lockjaw together , which Murphy then made a breakthrough. The song Drop the Game came to number 18 after it was included in the review of the Hottest 100 of 2013 by the station Triple J. His second album Built on Glass then reached number one in the Australian album charts in April 2014 . The album was also successful in New Zealand and in Europe from France to the Netherlands. He was also able to place in the USA. There he was known for his cover version of the Black Street song No Diggity , which was used in a TV commercial during Super Bowl XLVIIIs . The Super Bowl is the largest annual television event in the United States and has been watched by 108 million people worldwide. The most successful song on the album was Talk Is Cheap , which originally peaked at number 31. After he was voted number one in the Triple J Hottest 100 on Australia Day , he rose to number six in the singles chart at the end of January 2015. Two more of his songs made it into the top 10 and the album went platinum .

At the beginning of September 2016, Nick Murphy announced that he would no longer publish as Chet Faker, but under his real name.

Nick Murphy describes his genre as future beat combined with modern soul .
