Dionys Ganter (born May 26, 1798 in Bubenbach ; † November 26, 1862 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German painter.

Life

Dionys Ganter was one of eleven children of the blacksmith Andreas Ganter and his wife Rosina, his younger brother was the later innkeeper and painter Nikolaus Ganter (1809-1886).

Even as a child he was artistically gifted and initially also worked as a clock shield painter. In 1821 he went to Vienna , where he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts , first in the elementary drawing school, from 1823/24 and from 1826 to 1829 in the history painting class. In Vienna he got to know the Nazarenes and worked as a portrait painter. He then returned to his homeland and married Magdalena Scherzinger from Rötenbach in 1837 , where he initially lived after the wedding. In 1838/39 he settled in Freiburg.

In his time in the Black Forest he mainly painted wealthy farmers and citizens as well as views, in his time in Freiburg mainly religious motifs and altarpieces.
