Nikolaus Ganter (born December 5, 1809 in Bubenbach ; † July 24, 1886 in Friedenweiler ) was a German innkeeper, painter and Black Forest local poet .

Life

Nikolaus Ganter was the fourth of eleven children of the blacksmith Andreas Ganter and his wife Rosina, his older brother was the later painter Dionys Ganter (1798–1862). He married Juliane nee Kleiser († 1881) in 1838 and moved with her to Friedenweiler, where he took over the local beer house around 1840 and also worked as a council clerk. After the fire (together with the Maierhof) on October 27, 1861, he rebuilt the inn by June 24, 1862.

As a painter he initially worked as a clock shield painter , and as a painter he was self-taught. In his home in the Black Forest he painted village views and Black Forest courtyards, portraits as well as crossroads for several churches and chapels on sheet metal, mostly based on a template by Joseph von Führich (1800–1876), only the crossroad in Friedenweiler is based on its own composition. In addition to his work as a painter and landlord, he wrote Knittelvers poems in local dialect.

After his death in 1886, his son Karl Rudolph Ganter (1846–1899), who had been married to Anna Maria Weckermann since 1887, took over the inn. He was also active as a painter and, together with his father, painted the Way of the Cross and, in 1882, a fourteen helpers picture for the Bärenhof chapel in Schollach.
