Samba is a German band that was founded in Münster in 1994 , but is now at home in Hamburg , Leipzig and Berlin .

In the mid-1990s with Sony as a hopeful newcomer under contract in the slipstream of the Hamburg School , the group around songwriter Knut Stenert developed from German-speaking punk to indie pop, without being able to address a mass audience. The name of the band goes back to a sports shoe made by Adidas , which has been popular since the 1970s .

history

Samba was founded in 1994 by school friends Knut Stenert and Götz Grommek with drummer Thomas Hoppe. In 1995 their EP Das Licht was published by Sony, the title track The light that shines on me and comes out of the fridge in my kitchen achieved moderate radio fame. The video for Flach und aus Milch from the debut LP Zuckerkick was shown on music television.

With their German-language lyrics and dreamy punk-pop attitude, the band was quickly associated with the Hamburg School, although apart from the language they had little in common with corresponding bands.

After the second album tba , recorded with the new drummer Matthias Hirzel (also known as EV Hirzel and Hirzel Hirzelnsen) , which contains the last rock songs and opens the way to an indie pop band, was unsuccessful, the band from its major music label Epic Records (subsidiary of Sony Music ). The following two CDs were produced by the band in Hirzel's studio in Münster and were released in 1999 and 2001 on the Munich label Blickpunkt Pop , who discovered the sports fans Stiller , among others .

Knut and the Herbe Frau, November 2009 in Berlin

In 2004 Samba came under the prestigious indie label Wallpapers Records and released the album Aus den Kolonien there . On July 14, 2006, the same label released the sixth album Heaven for All , which was recorded in Berlin in spring 2006. Since Hirzel Hirzelnsen had left the band, Tobias Siebert (drums, guitar), who produced the album together with Knut Stenert, and his band colleague at Delbo , Florian Lüning (also drums), helped out in the studio . The band started touring in September 2006 with the ex- Astra-Kid guitarist Christian Götzer on drums. In 2008 Götzer was replaced on drums by Jörn Brucker (ex- Wolke ). Guitarist Gregor Schenk also joined the band.

In May 2009 Stenert and Benedikt Filleböck ( Cloud ) released an electro-pop album of the same name under the name "Knut and the Herbe Frau".

On April 1, 2011, the seventh samba album will be released with Die Ekstase der Möwen . Founding member Götz Grommek, who now plays bass with the band Elektrogrill, was no longer present during the recordings, Ramin Bijan from the doors now plays bass live.
