history

Die Nerven was founded in Esslingen am Neckar at the beginning of 2010 as a Lo-Fi band by Julian Knoth (bass, vocals) and Max Rieger (guitar, vocals). Together with the drummer Philipp Knoth, the two released various MP3 albums between 2010 and 2012. With the demo album Asoziale Medien (2012), the band was finally able to achieve a recording contract with the independent label This Charming Man Records . In 2012, drummer Kevin Kuhn finally got on board and Die Nerven continued as a trio . In December 2012 the album Fluidum was released via This Charming Man Records . The following album Fun , produced by Ralv Milberg , finally brought the breakthrough in 2014. Jan Wigger from Spiegel Online described the album as "one of the most important and best German-language records of this decade". The album was also highly praised in Spex magazine . The band Tocotronic was won over for the video for the song Angst , who appear there as imitations of Die Nerven. The editors of laut.de chose the album at number 11 of the albums of 2014. In the album of the year of the Berlin daily newspaper , the work landed at number 2. In the accompanying text, Christian Ihle named the band “best live band in the country”. This was followed by appearances at the Roskilde Festival and the Melt ! Festival as well as extensive concert tours and the like. a. also through Israel . This tour formed the documentary film Die Nerven in Israel by Simon Heinze and Florian Krauss.

On October 9, 2015, the third album Out was released by Glitterhouse Records (distributor: Indigo ) . The young world counted it as the fifth best pop album of 2015 in the annual review. In 2016, Die Nerven directed the music for the play The Invention of the Red Army Fraction by a manic-depressive teenager in the summer of 1969 at the Berlin Schaubühne and at the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart, directed by Armin Petras at. With Live in Europa , the band's first double live album was released on June 16, 2017, which was recorded at various concerts during the Out tour in winter 2015.

The spatial constraints of Stuttgart, the lack of free space for the scene and rehearsal rooms have led Kuhn to migrate to Berlin and Rieger first to Leipzig and later to Berlin. What has stayed is Knoth, who has so far been determined not to give up the many personal references there. The administrative manager of the band and the roadies or concert sound mixers are now in Berlin. In October 2017, the Goethe-Institut made it possible for a band to perform in Washington, DC , which drummer Kuhn and bassist / singer Knoth had to contest alone due to an entry ban for Max Rieger.

On April 20, 2018, the fourth album Fake was released , completely recorded in Tuscany in Ralv Milberg's mobile recording studio. It reached number 13 in the German album charts . Even before it was released, Intro magazine called it “the best German album of the year”. In the German feature pages 'll fake celebrated by many as the best ever German rock album of the year 2018, the music critics say the rbb . With this album, the band expanded their style and generated songs that were much more catchy and poppy than before. Kevin Kuhn said in an interview with Nadine Schmidt from Ox Fanzine that this development happened intuitively : [... "When we wrote the song 'Never', it was actually a strange moment and I was surprised myself that we would allow something like that . "]

style

The nerves play a mixture of different punk and post-punk styles with predominantly apolitically skeptical German-language song lyrics directed against social constraints. The music is influenced by different bands. To play Sonic Youth play a role, but there are also the heavy guitar riffs, for example, Black Sabbath used. The song Summertime Sadness by Lana del Rey , which was covered by the nerves , turns out to be much harder, edgier and not exactly melancholy in the Germanized single Sommerzeit, Sadness .

Side activities

Besides Die Nerven, all three band members are also active in other bands and projects. Max Rieger has released three solo albums under the pseudonym All This violence ( No point is fixed anymore 2014, World in brackets 2016 and World in brackets (Addendum) 2017) and is also employed as a music producer (including Drangsal , Friends of Gas ). Kevin Kuhn is also a member of the bands Karies , Wolf Mountains and the Berlin band Scharping . As a hobby, Julian Knoth maintains the two local band side projects Yum Yum Club and Peter Muffin , where his brother Philipp Knoth drums each time. With Peter Muffin he released the album Ich und meine 1000 Freunde in 2017 , which mainly contains his compositions and lyrics. He attaches particular importance to the fact that not business-like planning, but musical improvisation determines the sound. With Thomas Westner from the Munich band Friends Of Gas , he founded and runs the Butzen label , which publishes musically interesting band projects on cassettes.
