Candelilla is an indie rock band from Munich, founded in 2001 .

history

The formation was founded in 2001 as a youth band. For many years Candelilla only appeared in the regional scene and toured once as the opening act for Slut . The band name comes from the plant Candelilla (Euphorbia antisyphilitica) back from the Candelilla wax is obtained and thus also in lip balms brand Labello is used. When looking at the ingredients of one of these, the band was baptized with the same name. The real meaning of candelilla comes from the Spanish and means small candle .

Several changes followed. After longtime drummer Dominique de Marné left the band in early 2007, Sandra Hilpold, who previously played in the band Portinari, took over her position. The band itself describes this new line-up on their website with the words "Candelilla was reborn in 2007".

In 2009 the new formation's first official album was released, entitled ReasonReasonReasonReason . Public relations and marketing were funded by the Initiative Musik in 2012 . The album Heart Mutter , released in 2013, was recorded by Steve Albini in Chicago . In recent years the four-piece band toured in other European countries. A concert recording from Leverkusen was released in August 2014 with the title Heart Mutter live in cassette format .

In 2017 Candelilla was awarded the Music Prize of the City of Munich .

Band members

Rita Argauer (* 1985) and Mira Mann (* 1987) write regularly for the sz youth page . Argauer also writes for Missy Magazine . Mann is also a trained dancer at the Royal Academy of Dance , London , and also worked as an assistant director for the Munich performance group Hunger & Silk . Sandra Hilpold (* 1976) is, among other things, a trained sound engineer and artistically active in the field of new media and video art . Lina Seybold was a research assistant at the Section for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry of the Department of Geo and Environmental Sciences at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

style

The band's songs are bilingual with English and German fragments. A bandleader does not exist. Except for the drummer, everyone gets involved with the vocals, with each musician writing her own text passages. Musically, the band experiments and can hardly be classified into categories. Candelilla tries to make the pieces open and musically has moved away from the classic stanza-chorus structure. The Austrian magazine profil wrote in 2013:

" Noise , indie , pop , rock , punk , a shot of Riot Grrrl and in the end none of that and still played: The Munich band" Candelilla "doesn't value categories, instead the four musicians prefer to experiment."

Music editor Florian Kreier rated the style of the Heart Mutter album as follows:

“Anyone who thinks that candelillas sound different just because Steve Albini mixes them is wrong. Of course, candelillas sound like candelillas: torn guitar walls and stoic-atonal piano volleys meet the wreck of a drum kit and a bass that sounds like it is being strangled all the time. On their album "Heart Mutter" the women prove time and again that they are serious about their programmatic refusal to play pop music. An indication of this is the extent of the destruction: The numbered songs are abstract and emotionally neutral audio sculptures, the maximum cerebral product of about everything that European intellectual history has to offer in terms of unruliness. Candelillas deny themselves everything: beauty, joy, humor, cosiness and, first and foremost, of course, pop music. But they do it with an obsession and an emphasis that is second to none. "

The bassist Mira Mann describes that the formation sees their music “as a research work” and that the songs served “as experiments”. For this reason, the songs are not given titles, but are numbered consecutively. From the band's point of view, song titles would “distract from a search with an open outcome”. The tracks have been numbered since the reorganization in 2007. The songs on the albums are arranged thematically, not chronologically.
