Boy & Bear is an Australian folk rock band from Sydney , who had their breakthrough in 2011 with the album Moonfire .

history

The five original members knew each other from their time together at the university, where they initially played in different bands. Three of them were even heads of their own band. But they knew each other from appearances together and had jammed together on the side . In early 2009, Dave Hosking uploaded the song The Storm to the Triple J broadcaster , where it was voted the feature song of the young talent program Unearthed in February. From this the joint project Boy & Bear developed together with Killian Gavin, Jake Tarasenko and the brothers Tim and Jon Hart. The special features of the band include the harmonious singing of the various front people as well as the versatile songwriting of the musicians, who come from different musical backgrounds.

In the same year they published the joint piece Mexican Mavis . They won Triple J's Unearthed competition and were named Artist of the Year. After the first successes of their single on Australian radio, they signed a record deal with Island Records Australia . Then they played in the opening act for the Australian appearances of Angus & Julia Stone , Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling , with Marling they even appeared in Great Britain and Tarasenko and Tim Hart even played in their backing band. In autumn 2010 she led the sold out “Blood-to-Gold” tour through Australia.

In 2010, Boy & Bear released their first EP with the title With Emperor Antarctica , which included three new songs in addition to the two well-known songs. Their next single was a cover version of Fall at Your Feet by Crowded House at the end of the year . This was the first time they entered the top 50 of the Australian charts. The successor single Feeding Line was also successful in the charts. In the summer of 2011, the debut album Moonfire was released. It rose to number two on the album charts and achieved platinum status . They also won the ARIA Award 2011 for album of the year. They received four other awards, including the Best Music Group Award, making them the most successful artists at this award of the most important Australian music award.

In May and June 2012 Boy & Bear toured again through Australia (“Remember-the-Mexican” tour) and then also performed a number of appearances in Europe in August, including in St. Pölten in Austria. In October, the band announced that Jake Tarasenko broke up with the band. The sequel to "Moonfire" is titled "Harlequin Dream" and was recorded in Sydney. Release date was August 16, 2013.

The following, two years later, the third album was entitled "Limit of Love" and was released on October 9, 2015 and entered the Australian charts at number 1. It was produced by the well-known British multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns .

After a nearly four-year hiatus due to singer Dave Hosking's severe bowel disease, the band returned with the release of their fourth studio album "Suck On Light". It was released on September 27, 2019 and was produced by the band themselves, together with Collin Dupuis. It is the first release of new studio material in four years.
