Ozark Henry
Ozark Henry is the stage name of the Belgian musician, singer and composer Piet Goddaer (born April 29, 1970 in Kortrijk , Belgium).
Ozark Henry's music style can be classified between pop and rock, the songs are characterized by elaborate arrangements and a high level of melodiousness. His distinctive singing has a high recognition value .
The beginnings
Piet Goddaer is the son of the classical and jazz composer Norbert Goddaer. He started playing the saxophone and piano at the age of six. Goddaer got to sixteenth birthday an electric guitar donated and founded with his brother Jan rock band Church of the Nemesis .
In the further course Goddaer played in several local Belgian bands. As the rapper of the band Word , which was founded by his brother Jan, Goddaer marked a cult hit in 1994 with the song Henry Man - She .
Music career
In 1995 Goddaer used the stage name Ozark Henry. The name Ozark is based on a highland plateau in the USA ( Ozark Mountains ) and Henry is the name of some characters in novels by William S. Burroughs .
"I thought it would be cool if I had an artist's name that would be easier to pronounce than my own name - especially in other languages. I saw an old picture of two children from the Ozark mountain range [in the US]. The angle of the photo focuses on the kitten they're holding, so you can't see their heads. I chose the word 'Ozark' because, like the picture, my music is about a different way of looking at something that is common. 'Henry' is the name of several characters in William Burroughs' books, which I read. He also uses it to refer to heroin - but that's not my intention, of course. "
The following year his debut album, I'm Seeking Something That Has Already Found Me , was released, which received high praise from critics, but was not a great commercial success.
The second album This Last Warm Solitude was released in Belgium in 1998 and the Netherlands, Germany and France the following year. In 1999 Goddaer received a Zamu Music Award for best songwriter / composer.
The following album, Birthmarks , was released in 2001 and marked the commercial breakthrough for Ozark Henry. The singles Rescue and Sweet Instigator were very successful in Belgium. The album went platinum in Belgium. In 2001 Goddaer won two Zamu Music Awards in the categories best pop / rock and best producer . Because of his great success, Henry now appeared regularly on television and radio shows.
His fourth album The Sailor Not The Sea was released in 2004 and reached gold status in Belgium the following year.
In November 2005 his first DVD was released, entitled Easter Sunday // Live At The Ancienne Belgique . It shows an approximately 2 hour long concert from March 27, 2005 from the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, which includes 21 titles.
The fifth album The Soft Machine was released in September 2006. Decoupling These Days reached as the first single from Ozark Henry at all the top 20 of the Belgian Ultratop 50 charts.
On the occasion of his tenth anniversary as a solo artist, the best-of album A Decade was released in 2007 .
Stef Catteeuw, who had been guitarist for Ozark Henry since 2001, died unexpectedly in 2009. Catteeuw's eye-catching guitar sound helped shape the musical style of the albums The Sailor Not The Sea and The Soft Machine .
In 2010 the compilation The Essential was released , which contains all singles from 1996 to 2006, as well as soundtrack material and rare songs.
In October 2010 Ozark Henry released his sixth studio album with Hvelreki . It is Henry's first album for EMI Music. It was published in Germany on April 15, 2011.
In the spring of 2013 Ozark Henry announced his seventh studio album Stay Gold , the first single being the duet I'm Your Sacrifice . Expected release date is April 19, 2013.
Goddaer also wrote the music for several theater projects and soundtracks for the Belgian television series Sedes & Belli and the Dutch feature film Kreuzzug in Jeans , based on a novel by Thea Beckman .
