The duo originally called themselves "Monarch" when they were founded in 2006, before changing the band name to "Wye Oak", a reference to Wye Oak , the symbol tree of their native US state of Maryland. They self-published their debut album If Children in 2007 and shortly thereafter came under Merge Records , which re-released their album in 2008. The next album, The Knot, followed two years later .

The album Civilian was released in March 2011 on Merge Records in the USA and City Slang Records in Europe. An edited version of the title track was used for the trailer of the second season of the television series The Walking Dead as well as in the final scene of the episode 18 Miles Out of the same series. It was also used in the final scene of the 13th episode of the US remake of the television series Being Human .

Another album, Shriek , this time produced by Nicolas Vernhes and full of stylistic course corrections, was released again in April 2014 on Merge Records. It was successful in the Billboard album charts in 2014 (including Top Modern Rock / Alternative Albums No. 12), as was Civilian , which was 36th on the Top Independent Albums and No. 1 on the Top Heatseekers.

Civilian's title track was included in the soundtrack of two feature films (2012 Safety Not Guaranteed and 2013 The Odd Way Home ) and several US television series.

style

Her music has been described by reviewers as "serious folk-induced indie rock with nuances of noise and dream pop". Jenn Wasner sings as the front woman and plays electric or acoustic guitar or bass, while Stack manages the feat of playing drums and keyboard at the same time, drums with his feet and right hand and bass / keyboard with his left hand.
