Merge Records is an American Independent - music label from Durham , North Carolina .

Label history

Merge was founded in Chapel Hill in 1989 by Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance to distribute singles and cassettes from their band Superchunk and recordings of musician friends. The first album Tossing Seeds , a Single Collection her band Superchunk, appeared on the label on April 1, 1992. The first album in the US Billboard 200 achieved was Funeral , the debut album by Arcade Fire . Arcade Fire also made the highest new entry for the label with their follow-up album, Neon Bible , which debuted on No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The label also sells some European bands like Shout Out Louds in the USA.
