Frederick "FM" Cornog (* Norfolk, Virginia) is an American songwriter, singer and self-taught instrumentalist who records his pieces under the stage name East River Pipe in his home studio. The New York Times describes Cornog as "the Brian Wilson of the home studio".

Life

Cornog was born in Norfolk / Virginia and grew up in Summit / New Jersey . After school, he had worked in a variety of menial jobs before succumbing to alcoholism, drug use, mental health problems, and homelessness and eventually living in New York's Hoboken Train Station.

At that time he met Barbara Powers from Astoria and, through her support and record label Hell Gate, brought the unfiltered dirt to the East under the name East River Pipe, which he chose when he saw a sewer pipe, with the first self-recorded cassettes and 7 "singles River poured out, these early releases drew the attention of the British label Sarah Records , which distributed his songs from 1993 to 1996, making him one of the few American musicians the company has ever signed.

In the United States , Cornog released his first record, Shining Hours In A Can , on small Chicago label Ajax Records in 1994. A year later he found a longer-term engagement with Merge Records from Chapel Hill, an indie label owned by Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance. Merge published Poor Fricky (1995), Mel (1996), The Gasoline Age (1999), Shining Hours In A Can (2002; reissue), Garbageheads On Endless Stun (2003), What Are You On? (2006) and We Live In Rented Rooms (2011).

East River Pipes pieces were u. a. Covered by David Byrne , Lambchop , The Mountain Goats , Okkervil River , The Pains of Being Pure at Heart , Hazeldine and For Against . Rolling Stone called Cornog "the most gifted of the new loners".
