Camera Obscura is a Scottish indie band.

Band history

In 1996 singer and songwriter Tracyanne Campbell, drummer and singer John Henderson, bassist Gavin Dunbar and guitarist David Skirving founded the band Camera Obscura in Glasgow . In the first few years they took on several singles and the group grew to six members. They became known to a wider public when they became known to BBC radio host John Peel in 2001 . The following year they released their debut album Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi . In these early years they were repeatedly supported by musicians from the band Belle and Sebastian , which was founded in Glasgow at the same time . The second album Underachievers Please Try Harder followed in 2003. It was released not only in their homeland, but also in the USA.

In 2004, the musicians set two poems by the Scottish national poet Robert Burns to music for the Peel Sessions, and when their patron John Peel died that same year, they dedicated the single I Love My Jean to him . In the meantime, Camera Obscura had successfully gone on tour around the world. They produced their next album in Sweden together with producer Jari Haapalainen, but without the second singer John Henderson, who had previously left the band. This brought the singing of Tracyanne Campbell alone into the foreground. Let's Get Out of This Country was released internationally in 2006 and brought them their first notable success in the US independent charts.

The following years brought further changes, so trumpeter Nigel Baillie withdrew as a permanent member of the band, although he still performs with the band occasionally. They also changed labels. The final breakthrough came in 2009 with the album My Maudlin Career . This made it for the first time in the official album charts in both Great Britain and the USA. After that, the band took a break because of health and personal problems of the members. By 2013, however, they had finished a new album, this time recorded with producer Tucker Martine in the USA. Desire Lines was able to build on the chart success of its predecessor. Keyboardist Carey Lander died of bone cancer on October 11, 2015 .
