Woods of Birnam is a pop band that was founded in 2011 in Dresden . It consists of the actor and musician Christian Friedel and four musicians from the former German pop band Polarkreis 18 .

history

Four musicians from the band Polarkreis 18 supported Christian Friedel in 2011 on a tour that was booked as part of the promotion for Friedel's solo EP The Closer EP . After this tour, Woods of Birnam was founded as a side project to Arctic Circle 18. The name refers to the forest of Birnam , which plays a fatal role in Shakespeare's drama Macbeth for the title character.

In December 2011, the recording of a first album began, but it was broken off in spring 2012. This recording session resulted in a. for further concerts of the band the EP The Healer EP, limited to 200 copies, was produced at their own expense and released without a permanent label.

In September 2012, rehearsals began for a production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet , directed by Roger Vontobel . Friedel played the title role in it and Woods of Birnam accompanied him as a live band. The songs and music that emerged from this work were published as a Hamlet Live EP in 2013 with the support of the magazine Theater der Zeit and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden .

In May 2013, the recordings for the debut album began in the Radiobuellebrueck Studio under the direction of producer Tobias Siebert . Production took a good year and ended in June 2014. The debut album of the same name was released on November 7, 2014 after the singles The Healer and I'll Call Thee Hamlet were released digitally.

In December 2014 it was announced that the band will contribute the theme song to the Til Schweiger film Honey in the Head . So the single I'll Call Thee Hamlet was digitally re-released in December.

In March 2015 the band's first major tour through Germany and Austria followed.

On February 25, 2016, the band took part in the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 . The song Lift Me Up (From The Underground) should be a first harbinger of the planned album Grace , but the band gave preference to the planned Shakespeare project.

In December 2016 the theater production Searching for William premiered at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden , where Friedel also took over the direction. It covers a wide range of Shakespearean texts by Woods of Birnam with music and drama.

After a series of individual club concerts in German-speaking countries from January 2018 organized the band in June 2018, the first open-air festival "Come to the Woods" in Dresden and met with the musician friends of Joco , Kat Frankie and Enno Bunger on .

Her third album Grace was released on October 5, 2018 . Until the end of 2018, in addition to individual guest concerts, the focus will be on theater performances in Düsseldorf and Dresden, and from January 2019 a tour of Germany for the new album of nine concerts will follow.
