Eurovision Song Contest 2016 - Our song for Stockholm , the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, took place on February 25, 2016 and was used to select a song for participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 . On January 5, 2016, the program title, date and concept of the preliminary decision were published by the NDR . As in the previous year, the show was moderated by Barbara Schöneberger and commented by Peter Urban .
Originally, a song for the participant Xavier Naidoo, who was announced on November 19, 2015, was to be found under the title Our Song for Xavier . However, the NDR withdrew the decision two days later. Jamie-Lee Kriewitz was able to prevail among ten candidates with the song Ghost . She represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2016 and came last.
Our song for Xavier
On November 19, 2015, after an internal decision, Norddeutscher Rundfunk announced that Xavier Naidoo would take part as a German participant in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in the Swedish capital Stockholm . Several composers and producers were asked for song suggestions. On December 15, 2015, a jury with the participation of Naidoo was supposed to select the six songs that should have been voted on in the preliminary decision under the title Our Song for Xavier . On February 18, 2016, the preliminary decision was to be broadcast live on Das Erste . The decision for one of the six songs performed by Naidoo should only be made by the television audience, who should be supported in the assessment by Lena Meyer-Landrut and two experts. Thomas Schreiber , entertainment coordinator on ARD, explained Naidoo's selection by saying that he was one of the best singers in Germany who, unlike most of the others, could also sing live. He was also ready to experiment with a song chosen by the audience.
The decision by ARD / NDR to reduce audience participation to the selection of the song to be sung was controversially discussed in various media against the background of improved chances of winning. The decision in favor of Naidoo as a singer, however, met with strong media criticism. An appearance by the singer in the Reich Citizens' Movement and various statements made by the singer that suggested a homophobic , anti-Semitic and conspiracy-theoretical worldview were seen as problematic . The former federal chairman of the Greens, Claudia Roth , rated Naidoo's potential participation as “completely wrong”. In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Michael Hanfeld described Naidoo's statements in the past as "all in all nonsense to the power of seven". On Twitter was reacted with malice and mockery of the election Naidoo.
ARD entertainment coordinator Schreiber emphasized that Naidoo stands for tolerance towards all life plans and is neither homophobic nor anti-Semitic. He asked whether all "expressions of hate" in social networks had a factual basis. As a consequence, the NDR withdrew Naidoo's nomination. Naidoo responded on the evening of November 19th with the following statement: “With my whole being I stand for a cosmopolitan and hospitable Germany and a respectful and peaceful dealings with one another. I have also always emphasized that I do not share the opinion of the so-called Reichsbürger, from whom I have clearly distanced myself in public. ”In a press conference on November 25, 2015, ARD chairman and NDR director Lutz Marmor commented on Naidoo's withdrawal as ESC candidate and the further procedure where in all likelihood the audience will again be able to choose the candidate in a preliminary decision.

concept
On January 4, 2016, the Focus reported that the preliminary decision was entitled Eurovision Song Contest 2016 - Our song for Stockholm and should take place on February 25, 2016 at 8:15 p.m. It was also reported that the production company Brainpool is responsible for the show. Brainpool has been involved in shaping the German preliminary round since 2010.
The ARD announced that ten artists with one song each will compete in the preliminary decision. This time only the audience was supposed to vote for the representative of Germany via televoting and, for the first time, via the Eurovision Song Contest app in two voting rounds. NDR and ARD received a total of 150 applications from German radio stations, music labels, producers, artists and their managers. A ten-member jury consisting of representatives from the young ARD radio stations (Aditya Sharma / Fritz , Andreas Zagelow / Sputnik ), the NDR (Carola Conze / Thomas Schreiber), the music labels (Tom Bohne / Universal Music, Nico Gössel-Hain / Sony Music , Steffen Müller / Warner Music) and Independents (Konrad von Löhneysen / Embassy of Music ) as well as the production company Brainpool (Claudia Gliedt / Jörg Grabosch ) selected the ten performers and their songs.
