Big Thief is an American indie rock band from New York . With the album UFOF they achieved their international breakthrough in 2019.

Band history

The head of the band is the singer Adrianne Lenker from Minneapolis . Even as a teenager she consistently pursued a music career and published her first own material. She studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and then moved to New York . There she met the Texan Buck Meek, also a singer, guitarist and Berklee graduate. They released two EPs as a duo before forming the band Big Thief in 2014 together with bassist Max Oleartchik and drummer Jason Burger .

At the same time, Lenker pursued her solo career with her own publications, but the band was more successful. The joint debut album Masterpiece came to number 10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Charts and brought them festival appearances at South by Southwest and offers to go on tour with established artists such as Frankie Cosmos and M. Ward as support. In 2017 they had their first television appearance in Late Night with Seth Meyers . Burger had already left the band by then and was replaced by Burger before the first band album was released by James Krivchenia, who had already worked on the first album production. The second album Capacity , combined with their own tour and appearances as the opening act for Conor Oberst , increased their popularity, but did not advance them significantly. In 2018 there was a short break from the band with solo projects by Lenker and also by Meek.

The breakthrough came in 2019 with the third album UFOF (stands for "UFO friend"). Big Thief had previously changed labels and were now under contract with the British indie label 4AD . With the album they not only made it into the US album charts , but were also able to place themselves in the charts in Great Britain and other European countries. The album was also praised by music critics and at the Grammy Awards 2020 it was nominated for the award in the category Best Alternative Album . Just a few months after UFOF , the next album, Two Hands , was released, which confirmed its success and established it in the top 10 of the indie charts.
