King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is an Australian psychedelic rock band formed in Melbourne , Victoria in 2010 . The group has released a total of 15 studio albums since 2012, five of them in 2017 alone.

In the early days, the band's music developed from surf and garage rock to psychedelic rock to a mixture of many different influences, with components from progressive rock , folk , jazz , soul and metal . In 2016 the band was recognized at the ARIA Awards in the category Best Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Album .

history

The singer and guitarist Stu Mackenzie met from 2010 onwards with Ambrose Kenny Smith, Joey Walker, Cook Craig, Lucas Skinner, Michael Cavanagh and Eric Moore for various jam sessions . On the advice of a friend, the band performed at a concert for the first time and had to think of a name at short notice. While Mackenzie wanted to name the band Gizzard Gizzard , a band member who was not known by name preferred Lizard King , the nickname of the Doors singer Jim Morrison . As a compromise, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard was chosen. This was followed by the first single Hey There - Ants & Bats and in 2011 the two EPs Anglesea and Willoughby's Beach .

The band was signed to the Flightless record label and released their debut album 12 Bar Bruise in 2012 . Curiously, the singing was not recorded via a microphone , but via an iPhone . A year later the musicians released two studio albums with Eyes Like the Sky and Float Along - Fill Your Lungs . In 2014 this was repeated with the albums Oddments and I'm in Your Mind Fuzz , with the former making it into the Australian album charts for the first time. In 2015 the band also released Quarters! and Paper Mâché Dream Balloon two studio albums. The specialty of the album Quaters! is that it contains four songs, all of which are 10:10 minutes long. With Nonagon Infinity only one album was released in 2016. On this album, each song merges into the next, which also applies to the last and the first.

In 2017 King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released five studio albums, namely Flying Microtonal Banana , Murder of the Universe , Polygondwanaland , Sketches of Brunswick East (with Mild High Club) and Gumboot Soup . Flying Microtonal Banana made it to number two on the Australian album charts, while the USA made it into the album charts there for the first time.
