Augustines (formerly We Are Augustines ) were an American indie rock band from Brooklyn , New York , consisting of guitarist Billy McCarthy, drummer Rob Allen and Eric Sanderson, who plays multiple instruments. Augustines were known for their performances, where they interacted a lot with the audience. At numerous concerts they left the stage to play between the fans in the auditorium.

history

Prehistory and origin

McCarthy and Sanderson were initially members of a band called "Pela". The material for the Augustines' debut album was created when McCarthy was still writing dozens of songs for Pela. and Sanderson also contributed numerous demos . In total, Pela could choose from almost 40 songs. The album was almost finished, but the band was dissatisfied with the results and wanted to repeat the recordings. "We had to do it twice because it just wasn't strong enough," said Sanderson. Throughout the recording process, the band argued with their record label, their manager and each other. A little later, McCarthy learned that his brother James had committed suicide. Pela did not survive all these problems.

After splitting up with two other members of Pela, McCarthy and Sanderson decided to finalize the album. They named their new band "Augustines". The name of the band is derived from the month of August. McCarthy, Sanderson and also McCarthy's brother James were born in August. James' story was one of the main influences on the first album. Pela also broke up (very quickly, “in the course of two weeks”) in an August (2009). The band was originally called "Augustines", but changed the name to "We Are Augustines" due to other bands of the same name. In August 2013 she announced on YouTube that she would call herself "Augustines" again from now on.

Rise Ye Sunken Ships (2011)

After previous experience with record labels, McCarthy and Sanderson decided to record the album independently. This turned out to be more difficult than they had imagined, but with support from the indie community, particularly John Richards of radio station KEXP , they were finally able to finish the album. The album was produced by David Newfeld, best known for his work with Broken Social Scene . The first appearance with the new material, still under the original (and later re-recorded) name "Augustines", was on October 18, 2010 at the Cutting Room Studios for KEXP. Before the album was released, the band announced that Rob Allen had joined them as a drummer.

Rise Ye Sunken Ships was released digitally on iTunes on June 6, 2011and on CD on August 23, 2011 in North America, Australia and New Zealand. The worldwide release followed on March 5, 2012. In October 2011, a tour of the United Kingdom followed.

The Digital Fix made the album's first single, Book of James , one of their singles of the week. The Berlin radio station FluxFM closed the review of the album with the words “we are fans”. The NME called the album good, but very emotional. The BBC compared the band to Bruce Springsteen and Arcade Fire .

The album deals with many difficult and painful topics for the band members, most notably the suicides of McCarthy's mother and brother, both of whom suffered from schizophrenia. The band's drummer, Rob Allen, said that despite the focus on painful subjects, the album was also infused with positive attitudes and hope: “The songs are about things that happened over a period of time. They mean a lot to us, especially Bill, and that's not going to change, but we're living proof that things can get better, that opportunities are given to you and that is worth celebrating! We're cheerful and full of energy, we want to enjoy life and I think you can see that at our concerts. ”The band toured Europe promoting the album, playing at festivals like Pukkelpop and Reading & Leeds , as well as major ones Concert halls like Shepherd's Bush. In 2014, the band toured the United States supporting Frightened Rabbit .

In June 2011, the music video for Chapel Song won the Los Angeles Art-House Film Festival's award for best music video. In March 2012, the band recorded a session at Abbey Road Studios . The band released the video for the third single from Rise Ye Sunken Ships , Juarez , on April 11, 2012.

Augustines and This Is Your Life (since 2014)

At the end of 2013 the band spent several weeks in the studio of producer Peter Katis (Frightened Rabbit, We Were Promised Jetpacks , Jónsi Birgisson ), where they worked on their self-titled third album Augustines . After completing the album, which was released in early 2014, the band began their first “own” (i.e. not supporting another band) US tour, during which numerous shows were sold out well in advance. The Augustines returned to the UK in early April and played at numerous European festivals over the summer. After repeated concerts in the USA in the autumn, they came back to Europe for further performances and concluded the year with a concert in front of 3,000 spectators in the London Roundhouse . This show was recorded for the Rise documentary about the band.

In August 2015, after the end of a US / European tour, the Augustines began work on their next album. This Is Your Life was released on June 10, 2016.

In early September 2016, the band announced their end-of-year split on their Facebook page.
