Benjamin Sainte-Clementine (born December 7, 1988 in London ) is an English musician and songwriter .

Career

Clementine was born the British son of Ghanaian descent in the London borough of Crystal Palace , but grew up in the north of the city in the Edmonton district .

His music has influences from Erik Satie , Antony Hegarty , Leonard Cohen , Nina Simone , Jimi Hendrix , Léo Ferré and Luciano Pavarotti , among others .

In 2008, at the age of 20, after a conflict with his longtime girlfriend and roommate, he left London and decided to move to Paris. Here he lived homeless for the first years and mostly played as a street musician or in bars and hotels to make a living. He was discovered by an agent named Aysam Rahmania FdP, who passed him on to his friend Mathieu Gazier, who would later become Clementine's manager.

In 2012 he appeared at the Cannes International Film Festival , where he met the French businessman Lionel Bensemoun. Through him, they decided to start a record company so that Clementine could record his music.

Eventually he became popular in the music scene, where he is described as "la révélation anglaise des Francos" ("The English Revelation of the Francofolies Festival"). Clementine signed a joint license agreement between Virgin EMI UK and Barclay France.

In 2014 he appeared at various events and festivals, including in Germany, before his debut album At Least for Now was first released in French-speaking countries in early 2015 . It became a chart success and was among the top 10 in France. Clementine was awarded a Victoire as a stage newcomer. The album won the British Mercury Prize and was then placed in the British charts at the end of 2015.
