Nicolai Dunger
Nicolai Dunger (born October 4, 1968 in Piteå as Claus Wilhelm Nicolai Dunger ) is a Swedish songwriter who grew up in Piteå and now lives in Stockholm .
biography
Dunger ended his football career in the early 1990s - he played for Tegs SK (now Umeå FC ) in Sweden's fourth-highest division - after which he recorded his first EP . He moved to Stockholm, worked there as a gardener for the Bellman Museum for seven years, wrote several songs a week and recorded a few promo EPs for the radio.
His first album Songs Wearing Clothes was released by Telegram Records Stockholm, a sub-label of Warner Music (Sweden) . Robert Fripp was responsible for the background noise for two songs ( Nature Child and We Left Us ) . He recorded the follow-up album Eventide together with the string quartet Tämmelkvartetten in 1997. This album contains u. a. a cover version of the Soundgarden song "Black Hole Sun". From 1998 Nicolai Dunger released a number of singles and CDs that were created in collaboration with members of the Swedish band The Soundtrack of Our Lives , whom he met at the Hultfreds Festival. The album This Cloud Is Learning , which was created in The Soundtrack of Our Lives' White Noise studio , did not sell particularly well, but compared to the previous albums, it generated the most media attention to date.
After a European tour with Emilíana Torrini , Nicolai Dunger learned that his record company had licensed the song Something in the Way for a commercial to the oil company Statoil. He didn't like this, but with the money he was able to start work on an album trilogy that was to be sold in small online shops as a limited edition of 500 copies on vinyl over the next three years. He first recorded Blind Blemished Blues in the summer of 2000 in collaboration with the Esbjörn Svensson Trio . The album sounds like the early work of Tim Buckley and Van Morrison . In 2001 he recorded the second part, A Dress Book , together with the trumpeter Goran Kajfeš and the Ensemble Kroumata. This largely instrumental album is reminiscent of a mixture of French musette, Finnish tango and Jewish klezmer. In the same year, the album Soul Rush , which Nicolai Dunger recorded together with Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström from the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, is released. Most of the album was recorded live in the studio, only the strings and horns were added later. For this blue-eyed soul album, which the press compared to Astral Weeks by Van Morrison, he was awarded the Swedish Grammy for best male artist of the year. Also in 2001 he contributed the music for the short film The Potter by Lena Dolata. In 2002 he finished the vinyl trilogy with the record Sweat Her Kiss , which compared to the second part again contains classic songs. In the same year, the three LPs were released as the CD box The Vinyl Trilogy .
Together with Will Oldham , Nicolai Dunger recorded his next album Tranquil Isolation in Louisville , Kentucky in 2002 . Within a week they recorded 13 spartan country songs in Oldham's studio. In March 2003 Nicolai Dunger was on tour as an opener with the American band Calexico . During the tour they recorded a cover version of the Love classic "Alone Again Or" at Beech House Recordings Studio in Nashville . Nicolai Dunger then cooperated with the American band Mercury Rev , whom he has known since 1998 and for which he played the opening act for the European tour in 2001. Eleven tracks were recorded for the album Here's My Song, You Can Have It, I Don't Want It Anymore, Yours Forever, Nicolai Dunger , which was released in March 2004.
Between 2005 and 2007, Nicolai Dunger released another CD series under the pseudonym A Taste of Ra , designed as a trilogy. In 2006 he released his first album with exclusively Swedish titles, dedicated to the Finnish-Swedish poet Edith Södergran . The plate with the title Nicolai Dunger Sjunger Edith Södergran contains poems by the poet with folk music . The album also resulted in a documentary that was shown on Swedish television. For the album Rösten Och Herren , which was released in 2007, he only records songs in his Swedish mother tongue. As part of the fourth Sit Down and Sing tour, which is organized by Mural Records , Nicolai Dunger presented his album Nicollide and the Carmic Retribution in Europe in spring 2008 . He performed solo with an acoustic guitar and was accompanied on some pieces by the other two participants in the concert series, Rosie Thomas and Josh Ottum. In July 2008, the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo backed its TV commercial for the American market with the song Something in the Way from the album This Cloud Is Learning . The song was used for different models, including the XC90 SUV and the S80 .
With the album Play , which was released in Scandinavia on October 14, 2009 , Nicolai returned to more pop and song-oriented music, which is why this album can also be seen as the actual follow-up album to Here's My Song… . Together with the pianist Mats Schubert (Bo Kaspers Orkester), the drummer Federico de Costa (Qoph), the saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar and the conga player Per Wikström, the album was recorded within a few days in Mats Schubert's summer house. After Nicolai Dunger was a guest singer on A Camp's second album Golden Teeth and Silver Medals, which was released in early 2009, Tears in a Child's Eye is once again a duet with Nina Persson ( The Cardigans , A Camp ) on Play .
In 2010 the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Vallmo (z. Ger .: Mohn), a soundtrack to the film by Pavlov Heinz, which Dunger wrote together with Jonas Kullhammar, was released. The film was never officially released, but was shown at private parties. After a long stay in Ireland, among others with Glen Hansard and the brewery lady Marina Guinness, the album Ballad Of This Land was created . This album, inspired by folk music and Ireland, was recorded at All Saints Church (Allhelgonakyrkan) in Stockholm. In October 2011 the album Cornelis vs. Riedel published, a project by jazz musician Georg Riedel . Singing he was accompanied by his daughter Sarah Riedel and Nicolai Dunger. Together they interpreted compositions by the Dutch-Swedish songwriter Cornelis Vreeswijk , who died in 1987 , 14 previously unpublished compositions and two that Georg Riedel had already written with Cornelis Vreeswijk in the 1960s. The album, which was nominated for the Swedish Grammy in the Jazz category in 2012 , is also a homage to Jan Johansson , with whom Georg Riedel set Astrid Lindgren films to music in the late 1960s .
