The Veils is a band from New Zealand , in London , the birthplace of their frontman ( singer and songwriter of) Finn Andrews, son of XTC - keyboardist Barry Andrews, a resident is.

Band history

Finn Andrews began playing music in Devonport at a folk club halfway up an extinct volcano in an old WWII bunker . There he played in a twelve-piece band for three years and wrote his first own songs.

Andrews left school at 16 and moved to London to form a band and find a label to help him record his compositions. Rough Trade Records' Geoff Travis helped him sign a contract with Blanco Y Negro . The recordings for the debut album The Runaway Found began in 2001. Even during the recording there was a rift between the band and the record label, which culminated in a court battle in 2003. The Veils received the rights to the previous recordings and could finish the album on Rough Trade Records.

The Veils' original line-up broke up in late 2004. Andrews returned to New Zealand to create a new formation. During the summer he rehearsed with two high school classmates . Together with Liam Gerrard (keyboard) and Sophia Burn (bass) he returned to London as a trio.

The album Nux Vomica was recorded in Los Angeles, produced by Nick Launay . It appeared in the first days of September 2006. Nux vomica is the name of a tropical tree from which strychnine is extracted. The toxin is said to be a remedy in homeopathic doses . Andrews related this ambivalence to himself when asked about his existence and his work.

In 2007, the song Vicious Traditions was used in the film Mr. Brooks .

style

Eclipsed categorized The Runaway Found as guitar pop with borrowings from Coldplay and Muse and Nux Vomica as Britpop , related to the Rolling Stones , Nick Cave and The Vines . Laut.de described the latter as melodic rock and mentioned the common comparisons with Starsailor and The Verve . In the special album review on the Internet platform, blues rock or Tom Waits , Leonard Cohen and Starsailor are cited for orientation. The WOM magazine did without a style description and only stated that the album title was appropriate because the songs were sometimes dark and threatening, sometimes beneficial.
