history
The program was created in the course of the merger of the SDR and SWF to form SWR from the two previous waves SDR 3 and SWF3 . SWR3 started broadcasting on August 30, 1998. Before that, both waves had been broadcasting a joint one-week listener hit parade under the title " SWR3 - Start ins Wildall " since midday on August 23 . “Start ins Wildall” was also the name of a free festival to start broadcasting in Baden-Airpark near Baden-Baden, with whose top act Herbert Grönemeyer officially began broadcasting SWR3. Michael Reufsteck moderated the first regular program of the new station, "SWR3 Luna" the following night.
Until August 2006, broadcasts in the Baden-Baden House of Radio were broadcast from studio rooms from which the SWF3 program was processed before the start of SWR3 broadcast.
Program and target group
SWR3 wants (as a core target group ) to appeal to listeners between 14 and 49 years of age and offers a 24-hour live program. The music is based on an Adult Contemporary - format . The station brings up -to-date information in the hourly SWR3 news and also in articles in the current program, such as during the show Topthemen at noon from 12 noon to 1pm and the mini feature SWR3-Topthema (5:40 pm).
Since January 2011, SWR3 has been designing the ARD Popnacht , the nationwide night program of ARD pop waves , every night .
Little by little, some changes took place in the program. "Pulse" was renamed to "Morningshow", "Magma" to "Until Twelve", "Now" to "At noon" and "Hiline" to "Afternoon Show". "HitHop" was initially replaced by the "Kai Karsten Show", later by "Popup". The “weekend show” is now broadcast on Saturdays between 3 and 6 pm, and “SWR3 Worldwide” on Sundays. The “Morning Show” was brought forward from 6 am to 5 am, “Luna” was extended by an hour and “Sunrise” (formerly “Up”) was deleted. In January 2010, the program “Intensiv”, which was broadcast on weekdays between 10 p.m. and midnight, was renamed “Popshop”, but according to the station's own advertising (“SWR3-Popshop: The SWR3 music program, more special than the daily program, with new CDs, it retains information about Music history and live recordings. ”) Her previous focus.
At the turn of the year 2015/2016, further changes were made to the program. "Until twelve" was renamed "Morning Show". In addition, “At noon” was renamed “Top Topics at noon” and shortened by one hour (from 12 noon to 2pm to 12pm to 1pm). "Popup" has also been brought forward by one hour to 1pm to 3pm, as has the "afternoon show" which now starts an hour earlier (3pm to 6pm). The "SWR 3 Club" has been extended by an hour and now broadcasts from 6 pm.
The SWR3 program claim is: “Desire for good music. Simply SWR3. ", Before there was the slogans:" The best music mix. Simply SWR3 ”,“ More hits. More kicks. Simply SWR3. ”,“ Leben im Wildall ”and“ Simply the best hits, simply SWR3 ”. The slogan “SWR3 - your radio number 1” has also been added. The station voice is Jan Garcia.
Overall, SWR3 is a well-formatted and well-structured program that draws attention to itself with major promotions. SWR3 is giving away trips and tours under the motto "SWR3 Elch und weg". a. with celebrities. The SWF3 New Pop Festival (in Baden-Baden), organized annually by SWF3 from 1994 onwards , was continued by SWR3. National and international artists perform at this festival. These changes in the program have led to high ratings again since around 2002, following a quota low after the merger. Regionalization
In the first few years there were also longer so-called “Metro windows” in addition to the central program. These included between one (Metro Rhein-Neckar from Heidelberg, Metro Rhein-Main from Mainz) and seven hours (Metro Stuttgart) on working days. They were broadcast via individual VHF frequencies in the target metropolitan areas, and Metro Stuttgart also via satellite ( ADR ). The other VHF frequencies continued to transmit the national program from Baden-Baden. In September 2002 all moderated routes from the regional studios were discontinued.
However, there is still a regional program, but these are only short features such as event information or weather reports. In addition, some regionalized jingles are broadcast. The four regions are designated as follows in the SWR3 program:
- Rhineland-Palatinate, the Rhineland and Rhine-Main (formerly: Rhineland-Palatinate and the Rhineland), in Jingles also: for the Rhineland, the Palatinate and Rhine-Main
- Baden, the Palatinate and Rhine-Neckar (formerly: the Palatinate and Baden), in jingles also: for Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate
- from the Alb over the Allgäu to Lake Constance (previously: from the Alb to Lake Constance), in Jingles also: for Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria
- Württemberg, from the Alb to the Main (formerly: Württemberg)
Via DVB-S , DVB-C and in Baden-Wuerttemberg and Berlin via DAB +, people are talking supra-regionally instead:
- SWR3-Land: from the Rhineland to Lake Constance
The internet radio picks up the regionalization for Baden-Baden.
watch TV
On Tuesdays at 11.30 p.m. the program “ The Pierre M. Krause Show - SWR3 latenight” (formerly “SWR3 Ring frei”) with Pierre M. Krause is broadcast on SWR television . The show is repeated on Thursdays in " One ". Between 1998 and 2002 there was also the "Elch-TV" (or "Wildall-TV") format in the night gap of Südwest-Fernssehen. ARD pop night
Since 1990 there has been a community night program of the ARD pop waves with the ARD Popnacht . Initially, depending on the day of the week, another ARD broadcaster was responsible for the joint program. Since it started broadcasting in 1998, SWR3 has designed the nights on Saturday and Sunday as well as individual nights during the week. In 2010/2011 the ARD changed the model. From now on, only one broadcaster is responsible for each community night program. On ARD Popnacht, this has been SWR3 since January 2011. The programs "Luna" (0:05 am to 5:00 am) or "Sunrise" (possibly afterwards until 6:00 am) can be heard, but these must be mentioned in jingles for the receiving programs without the program name to be provided.
The ARD-Popnacht produced by SWR3 is taken over by eight stations, sometimes not in full and sometimes without the SWR news:
Traffic information
The "SWR3 traffic center" reports every half hour on the traffic situation in the VHF transmission area and the adjacent areas. So-called "SWR3 traffic jam alarms" - registered listeners - can report traffic disruptions that have not yet been reported otherwise.
The traffic reports are read Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. by special traffic editors, outside of this time by the normal moderators.
mascot
The mascot of SWR3 is the " SWR3 Moose (formerly" Schwarzwaldelch called). The former SWF3 presenter Gerd Leienbach is considered to be the inventor of this moose , who used a movement noise module, which can be found in soft toys as an animal voice module, in his program. This module in the form of a small can makes a Mööh noise when you turn it over.
As part of the new SWR3 design, the SWR3 elk has been shown in an abstract look since September 2013 as a circular signet with elk antlers.
Occasionally, the broadcaster organizes the SWR3 elk alarm , where a small plush elk is given away to every listener on site.

Radio comedy
Like its predecessor, SWF3, SWR3 is known for its own radio comedy series. Some of these series have achieved cult status , for example Feinkost Zipp and Taxi Sharia . In the context of the 2006 World Cup, two comedy series dealing with ex-national soccer coach Jürgen Klinsmann (“Klinscamp”, “Klinsmään”) were very popular. Since Joachim Löw has been national coach, Klinscamp has become “Jogi's boys”.
In radio comedy, the voices of the voice imitator and SWR3 comedy boss Andreas Müller and those of the morning show presenters Michael Wirbitzky and Sascha Zeus can often be heard.
Every spring since 2016, SWR3 has organized the three-day SWR3 Comedy Festival in Bad Dürkheim . The SWR3 Comedy Award will also be presented at this festival.
Internet
After the previous channel, SWF3 , operated its own mailbox at the beginning of the 1990s , its first websites went online in mid-1994, initially at the University of Karlsruhe . The own domain followed in December of that year.
The web offering today consists of live streaming , web channels for special music interests, information on the current title, articles on music and current topics, radio comics, news, weather and traffic and has also been optimized for smartphones since September 2011. On May 8th, 2008 the internet community SWR3Land was founded.
In order to be able to listen to SWR3 over the Internet, you can either use the web radio directly via your browser on the SWR3 website or integrate the official live stream into an application. A free application is available for iPhone, iPod touch, Windows Mobile, WebOS and Android smartphones that enables the program to be received via the Internet and other information. So you can listen to the current SWR3 news or read traffic news and weather reports regardless of the current program. SWR3 was the first ARD broadcaster to introduce this service.
In addition to the regular SWR3 program, you can listen to four other channels from the original program in a loop over the Internet:
- SWR3-Party (hits from the show Clubparty)
- SWR3-Lyrix (translations of the lyrics )
- SWR3-Rock with Stefanie Tücking or Bernd Lechler
Studio webcam
Since May 2009 it has been possible to watch the moderators broadcast in Studio 1 using a studio webcam . The webcam was put into operation in Studio 2 in May 2010. Both webcams could be controlled by the viewer. However, only the webcam of the studio that is currently broadcasting can be viewed. The moderators have the option of deactivating the so-called Studiocam during their broadcast.
There were webcams in the studios in the old broadcasting complex. However, these did not have the option of being controlled by the viewer.
Visual radio
In October 2014, SWR3 and DASDING were the first radio stations in Germany to start regular interactive visual radio shows. The content of the broadcast should be made more tangible via the image level. For example, suitable photos from social networks are automatically displayed on current topics and can be commented on by users in real time. The visual radio runs regularly in the program "SWR3 PopUp" from 1pm to 3pm. B. also in the SWR3 morning show.
SWR3 club
There is also the possibility for the listeners to become a paid member of the "SWR3 Club". You get an identity card, ten times a year the club magazine "SWR3 Das Magazin" and discounts at many SWR3 events.
