Graham Alan Gooch , OBE , DL (born July 23, 1953 in Whipps Cross, Leytonstone , Essex ) is a retired English cricketer and former captain of England and the Essex County Cricket Club .
Career
During his active career from 1973 to 1997 (only in 2000 he played again) he was a very successful right - handed batsman . With a total of 67,057 runs, he holds the world record for the most total runs achieved in all forms of play. With 8,900 runs from 118 tests, he has the most runs for England in test matches and is one of only 25 players to have achieved at least 100 first-class competitions. In 2009 he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame .
The start of his international career for England was the first Ashes test in Edgbaston in 1975 , which he did, however, with a pair , i.e. H. zero runs from both innings began. After his second game wasn't much more successful either, he had to wait until 1978 for his next use in tests. As a member of the controversial so-called rebel tour to South Africa in 1982, he was banned internationally for three years , along with other players such as Geoff Boycott , Alan Knott and Bob Woolmer . In 1988 he became the English captain for the first time and in 1990 he scored 333 and 123 runs in the two innings in Lord's against India, the current record for the most runs in a test match.
Gooch was also a right-handed medium-pace bowler and scored 246 wickets in his first-class career with a respectable average of 34.37 runs / wicket. With his Essex CCC team, he won the County Championship six times between 1979 and 1992, as well as several one-day competitions, with particular success in the Benson & Hedges Cup .
