Robert Andrew Woolmer (born May 14, 1948 in Kanpur , India , † March 18, 2007 in Kingston , Jamaica ) was an English cricketer and coach.

Life

Robert Woolmer, called Bob, was the son of a British businessman who played first-class cricket himself . He was a right-handed batsman and played professional for the Kent county team from 1968 to 1984 and for the England national team from 1975 to 1981 . He played in 19 test matches and 6 one-day internationals . His results fluctuated greatly, so that he had no secure place in the national team.

As a trainer he worked with great success on three continents. From 1994 to 1999 Woolmer coached the South African team . In 2004 he took over the Pakistani national team after having worked for the International Cricket Council in the meantime. With Pakistan he last took part in the 2007 Cricket World Cup , where the team was eliminated prematurely after losing to the blatant underdog Ireland .

death

On March 18, 2007, he was found unconscious in his room in a Kingston hotel and taken to a hospital. Only his death could be found there. Rumors that he was diabetic after his death were denied by his wife, according to a Times article; however, he had complained of heart problems before leaving. After the autopsy , it was initially reported that Woolmer had been murdered by strangulation, possibly with the participation of several people he knew. The Jamaica Constabulary Force then interrogated more than 400 people and took fingerprints from all members of the Pakistani national cricket team. The players of the victorious Irish team were only allowed to leave Jamaica after they had submitted DNA samples . However, after months of research by the police and international medical experts, on June 12, 2007 the authorities determined a natural cause of death. Among other things, the original autopsy findings of a broken hyoid bone had proven to be a mistake.

Woolmer left behind his wife, Gillian Hall, who he had been married to since 1974, and two sons.
