Rochdale is a metropolitan borough in Metropolitan County Greater Manchester in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Rochdale , in which almost half of the population lives. Other significant places in the district are Heywood , Littleborough (Greater Manchester) , Middleton , Milnrow and Wardle .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The county borough Rochdale, the municipal boroughs Heywood and Middleton and the urban districts Castleton, Littleborough, Milnrow and Wardle were merged. These local authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire .
In 1986 Rochdale became a de facto Unitary Authority when the central government dissolved the higher-level administration of Greater Manchester. Rochdale remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire brigade and public transport.
