Ashton-under-Lyne is a town in the north of England , about 10 km east-northeast of Manchester . The city is located in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside on the banks of the River Tame the Greater Manchester county in the region North West England and has about 45,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
The name seems to be of Anglo-Saxon origin and to mean a settlement on the ash trees (ash - dt. Ash trees). The origin of the addition “-under-Lyne” is controversial.
history
Even if the settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086 is only mentioned indirectly through a St Michael's Church, a settlement seems to have already existed. The Ashton reign is not mentioned until the late 12th century. The family named themselves after the settlement Assheton (also: Ashton).
Until the middle of the 18th century the area was considered a desolate moorland. Finally, the settlement became an important small town through the settlement of numerous textile manufacturers. Today's street pattern is largely built at right angles. Despite the decline of industries, Ashton-under-Lyne has retained its importance through numerous large discounters in the north-east of Greater Manchester.
