Faulebutter is a hamlet in the municipality of Finnentrop with eleven inhabitants.
Rotten butter is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park . The hamlet was and is not an independent village, but belongs to Weuspert . The courtyards are at an altitude of 525 m, but parts of the fields are also significantly higher.
The settlement today essentially consists of two historical courtyards. This includes the house of a Rademacher since the 19th century, which is now a well-known inn in the region. There used to be more buildings, as the old foundation walls show.
The unusual name was interpreted, among others, by Werner F. Cordes. It means something like "the rotten harvest". This refers to poor agricultural conditions due to the altitude. Gertrud Junker traces the name back to "feel botte", a permanently muddy trough. This means different streams that come together in rotten butter.
Faulebutter is touched by the Lenneroute bicycle path and the Sauerland-Höhenflug hiking route , among others .
