The Lenneroute is a cycle path along the Lenne . It was opened on June 11, 2005 in Saalhausen in the Olpe district in Sauerland .

It extends from Winterberg (about 800 m above sea level) to Wetter (Ruhr) (110 m above sea level). In addition to the main route, there are two types of secondary routes: one leads to sights a bit away from the river valley, for example the Bigge , and the other, the so-called “energy path”, leads past several power stations. Overall, the Lenneroute is around 140 kilometers long. It crosses the landscapes of Saalhauser Berge , Ebbegebirge and Lennebergland .

Particular emphasis is placed on industrial history and energy generation .

Route

Start in Winterberg

From the center of Winterberg it is about 6 km to the actual starting point of the Lenneroute, the Lenne spring on the Kahler Asten . On the mountain is the Astenturm , which offers a far-reaching view over the Sauerland .

The first section of the route to Neuastenberg is sometimes very steep and leads over unpaved forest paths. The rest of the path in the Winterberg urban area also slopes down, but thanks to asphalt sections it is easier to drive. Sights near the route are the mountain Hoher Bone , the well-preserved castle ruins of Burg Rappelstein in Nordenau and the Black Factory , a historic factory for the production of charcoal products.

Schmallenberg

Mainly on asphalt side roads to Schmallenberg . The Oberkirchen district has a historic center with an early baroque church building from 1666 and a water mill from 1826. After climbing to the Wilzenberg you will find a hill fort, a pilgrimage chapel, an observation tower and a summit cross. Slightly off the route are the Holthausen slate mining and local history museum and the Grafschaft monastery from 1072.

The town of Schmallenberg also has a historic town center, which is bypassed by the cycle path on the other side of the Lenne. From Schmallenberg it is more frequent along the B 236, partly on a connected bike path. The Fleckenberg district houses a cutlery museum . After the districts of Lenne and Hundesossen you get to Lennestadt.

Lennestadt

The Lenneroute was opened in 2005 in Saalhausen , a district of Lennestadt . Wall castles near Gleierbrück and Theten are located above the valley. After a short section on the B 236 near Gleierbrück, you continue on quiet side streets. There used to be an ornithological station in Altenhundem . The observation tower on the Hohe Bracht is located off the route . In Meggen the mining museum Siciliaschacht and the Sauerland pyramids are worth seeing. There is also a short, extremely steep climb there.

In Grevenbrück the busy junction of the B 236 with the B 55 must be crossed. Then it goes on over side streets. The Lennestadt City Museum and the Peperburg castle ruins are in the village . From Grevenbrück you can take the B 55 to Elspe , Bilstein Castle and Attendorn with Biggesee , Ahauser Stausee , Attahöhle , Schnellenberg Castle and Waldenburg .

Finnentrop

In Finnentrop , some sections of the B 236 pass the Bamenohl run-of-river power station and Haus Bamenohl Castle . From the town center, the route leads on a side road on the other side of the Lenne to Lenhausen with the run-of-river power station and Lenhausen Castle . Above the castle, in the direction of Schönholthausen , the SauerlandRadring and the Ruhr-Sieg cycle path also crosses , some of which run on former railway lines with little gradients.

Plettenberg

Behind the Pasel von Plettenberg district , the side road leads steeply up to the ruins of Schwarzenberg Castle . Then it goes downhill past the Siesel hydropower station to Eiringhausen . The AquaMagis swimming pool , the Ohle hydroelectric power station and the Brüninghausen Castle near Ohle are located here . From Teindeln , the Lenneroute follows the B 236 again and leads over the busy main road.

Werdohl

In Werdohl , the route first leads through an industrial park, then again via the B 236, before things get a little quieter in the town center. Outside the city, the route leads back onto the federal road, past the Schlacht and Wilhelmsthal hydropower plants . For a few kilometers it's on a paved forest path, then back to the B 236. There is no bike path between Dresel and Altena. The route leads past the Elverlingsen coal-fired power station .

Altena

In Altena , a calm street is used in the city center. At the top of the mountain is Altena Castle with the German Wire Museum .

Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde

Between Altena and Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde you drive through the residential areas Opperhusen and Einsal (with the Einsal hydropower station ). There is no cycle path in Nachrodt. Here is the house Nachrodt worth seeing.

Iserlohn-Letmathe

From Iserlohn - Lasbeck , the path leads through industrial areas to the Iserlohn district of Letmathe . Exactly at the junction to Iserlohn-Zentrum is the rock formation Pater und Nun with the Grürmannshöhle . The Dechenhöhle with the German Cave Museum Iserlohn is on the road to Iserlohn-Zentrum . From Iserlohn-Letmathe to Hagen-Hohenlimburg there are again no bike paths available.

Hagen

In Hohenlimburg , today a district of Hagen , the Hohenlimburg Castle and the Raffenburg ruins are worth seeing. From Hohenlimburg the Lenneroute leads through the floodplains on a paved path to the Lenne estuary in the Ruhr and the Hengsteysee north of Hagen.

Weather

The further common course with the RuhrtalRadweg leads past the Harkortsee , another reservoir of the Ruhr. The Lenneroute ends at Wetter (Ruhr) station.

Expansion measures

Borghausen - Trockenbrück

The cycle path is to be continued along the B 236 between Borghausen and Trockenbrück in the Finnentrop - Lennestadt section. The necessary space for the new cycle path is to be created by a supporting wall towards the Lenne. So far, the cycle path along the road ends in Borghausen and cyclists have to take a narrow, unpaved field path in this area. A realization date for the measure is not foreseeable, as the intersection between B 236 and B 55 is to be redesigned in this area, including a bridge over the Lenne and a roundabout. Since the cycle path is influenced by the measure, it is not foreseeable whether the cycle path can be created beforehand.

Lenne - Störmecke

In the Lenne - Störmecke section between Lennestadt and Schmallenberg, the cycle path is to be relocated from its current route via the B 236 to a separate cycle path. In the past, the Landesbetrieb Straßen NRW tried unsuccessfully to acquire the land for this new cycle path. After the neighboring municipalities took over the negotiations, a solution for the purchase of land was found in the Lennestädter area. Negotiations are still ongoing in Schmallenberg.
