The Brüninghausen Castle is located in Plettenberg (district Ohle ) in the Märkisches Kreis in Sauerland , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The exact date of construction is not known, it was first mentioned in 1311 as a fiefdom of the Archbishop of Cologne "bona Brunnenchusen". Today the Brüninghausen Castle, which has a striking appearance with the two connected castle houses, is a residential building. It used to be a tower and a mill estate and was surrounded by a kind of moat until the beginning of the 19th century. The building stood in a pond which was later drained.

It is the parent company of the Brünninghausen family . Today it is owned by the von Wrede family and is inhabited by Christoph Freiherr von Wrede. Traditionally, there is a Christmas tree sale at Brüninghausen Castle.

The city of Plettenberg has registered the castle in a list since June 28, 1988 as a monument worthy of protection.
