Wolfgang Knies

Wolfgang Knies (born November 9, 1934 in Mainz ; † October 20, 2019 ) was a German legal scholar and politician ( CDU ).

Profession and Politics

Knies studied law in Mainz and Munich from 1954 to 1958 . He passed his second state examination in Munich in 1963. There he received his doctorate in 1966. iur. and completed his habilitation in 1971; he was authorized to teach in the subjects of constitutional law, administrative law, finance and tax law. In 1971 he accepted a position at Saarland University (Saarbrücken). In addition, Knies was a judge at the constitutional court of the Saarland from 1977 to 1980 .

In the second cabinet of the Saarland Prime Minister Werner Zeyer , Knies was Minister for Culture, Education and Sport (1980–1984). In the Zeyer III cabinet (1984–1985) he was responsible for the administration of justice and federal affairs. He then taught again in Saarbrücken until he was appointed to the fifth cabinet of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Ernst Albrecht in May 1987 . There he headed the cultural department as Lower Saxony's minister of education until November 1988 . He then resumed teaching at Saarland University. He was released on March 31, 2003.

From 1975 to 1980 Knies was a member of the commission to determine the financial needs of broadcasters . He held this office again from 2002 until his death in 2019.

Honors

Knies was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit on February 1, 2012 .
