Gerhard Zeitel

Gerhard Friedrich Hermann Zeitel (born November 25, 1927 in Rostock ; † January 26, 1991 in Weinheim ) was a German economist and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Zeitel was born the son of a tax inspector. After attending school, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944, then took part in the Second World War as a soldier and was finally taken prisoner, from which he was released in 1946.

After the end of the war Zeitel worked as a business consultant and was active in industry. He studied economics at the Free University of Berlin from 1948 to 1951 and then worked at Dresdner Bank and the Landeszentralbank in Berlin . In 1953 he became a research assistant at the University of Berlin, where it 1955 Dr. rer. pole. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Tübingen , where he completed his habilitation in 1960 with the thesis on The Distribution of Taxes in the Federal Republic of Germany .

In 1962 Zeitel received a chair for economics and statistics at the University of Mannheim , which he headed from 1970 to 1973 as rector. From 1975 to 1982 he was President of the Federal Association of German Economists and Business Economists .

Political party

Zeitel joined the CDU in 1969, was elected chairman of the CDU regional association in North Baden in 1970 and was a member of the party's federal executive committee from 1973 to 1990. From 1977 to 1987 he was federal chairman of the Union's SME and Business Association.

MP

Zeitel was elected to the German Bundestag for the first time in 1972 and entered parliament via the CDU Baden-Württemberg's state list. After being appointed Minister of Finance in the Saarland, he resigned his Bundestag mandate on September 3, 1980.

Public offices

On May 23, 1980, Zeitel was appointed Minister of Finance for the Saarland to the state government led by Prime Minister Werner Zeyer . On July 10, 1984, as part of a cabinet reshuffle, he moved to the head of the Ministry of Culture, Education and Sport. After the CDU lost the state elections in 1985, he left the government on March 12, 1985.
