Franz Gurk

Franz Gurk (* 9. February 1898 in Karlsruhe , † 12. July 1984 ) was a German politician of the CDU .

Life

Gurk began his professional career in 1913 with the city of Karlsruhe, where he worked out a leading position during the Weimar Republic . In addition, he was from 1926 to 1933 a member of the Center Party in the city council and from 1932 in the council of the greater Karlsruhe- Bruchsal - Pforzheim district . He appeared as an opponent of the NSDAP , which is why he lost his political offices after they came to power in 1933.

After the Second World War , he resumed his political activities , meanwhile with a doctorate in economics . From 1951 to 1968 he was regional chairman of the CDU North Baden . In 1952 he was elected to the state parliament of the newly formed state of Baden-Württemberg , where he was parliamentary group leader of the CDU, the strongest party with 36% in the elections. However, he was denied the office of first Prime Minister of the state after Reinhold Maier ( FDP / DVP ) was elected by the state constituent assembly on April 25, 1952 and the coalition he formed of DVP, SPD and BHE sent the CDU into the opposition.

Gurk ran for election to the mayor of Karlsruhe that same year, but lost to Günther Klotz in the runoff election on June 8th . He then held the office of mayor from 1953 to 1963. In addition, he was a member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament until 1972 , and from 1960 to 1968 he was also the state parliament president .

Since 1954 he was an honorary member of the Catholic student associations KDSt.V. Normannia in the CV .
