Peter Straub (politician)
Peter Karl Otto Straub (* 8. September 1939 in Waldshut, today Waldshut-Tiengen ) is a German politician of the CDU and from 1996 to 2011 President of the Parliament of Baden-Wuerttemberg .
education and profession
After graduating from high school in Waldshut, Straub began studying law in Freiburg and Munich . In 1962 he passed the first and in 1966 the second state examination in law. Since then he has been working as a lawyer .
Political activity
Straub's political engagement began in 1968 when he joined the CDU. In that year he became a city councilor in Waldshut and Waldshut-Tiengen (until 1989). From 1984 to 1999 he was also a member of the district council of the Waldshut district .
In November 1984 Straub entered the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg as a member. From 1992 to 1996 he was deputy president of the state parliament. In 1996 he was elected President of the State Parliament to succeed Fritz Hopmeier . After the state elections in 2001 and 2006, he was confirmed in office. After the state elections in 2011, he was no longer a member of the state parliament and therefore no longer ran for the election of the state parliament president. His successor as a directly elected member of the Waldshut state electoral district was Felix Schreiner . Willi Stächele became the new President of the State Parliament .
In addition to his state parliament activities, Straub also represented the state of Baden-Württemberg in the Committee of the Regions of the European Union (CoR), of which he was president from 2004 to 2006. Straub is also a co-founder of the Upper Rhine Council.
Straub came under fire in the summer of 2010 when he asked for a Porsche as a company car, which he eventually refrained from.
Family and private
Peter Straub was born as the son of the lawyer and later CDU politician Joachim Straub . He is married and has two children and two grandchildren.
