Lothar Gaa

Lothar Gaa (* the thirtieth March 1931 in Plankstadt ) is a German politician of the CDU and lawyer.

Life and work

Gaa attended the Realgymnasium in Schwetzingen , where he graduated from high school in 1951. He then studied law and business administration at the universities in Heidelberg and Freiburg . In 1959 he passed his state examination and obtained his doctorate in 1960 at the University of Heidelberg. jur. utr. He then opened a law firm in Schwetzingen. In addition, he received a lectureship at the University of Konstanz for constitutional and parliamentary law.

Today Gaa, together with his son Meinhard Gaa and two other lawyers, continues the law firm he founded in Schwetzingen in 1960. The firm specializes in labor, real estate and commercial law and mainly represents medium-sized companies and real estate funds.

Gaa has been married since 1959 and has a daughter and a son.

Party and offices

Gaa has been involved in politics since 1950 and joined the Junge Union , whose state chairman in North Baden he was from 1956 for ten years. Since 1952 he has also been a member of the CDU, where he became chairman of the Schwetzingen branch and in 1973 deputy chairman in the Rhein-Neckar district . In 1965 he also received a mandate in the municipal council of the city of Schwetzingen, which he gave up after being elected president of the state parliament in June 1980.

In 1968 Gaa was elected as a member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg , where he headed the Standing Committee for four years from 1972. In 1976 Gaa was elected Deputy President of the State Parliament, and four years later the State Parliament elected him to succeed Erich Ganzenmüller, who was no longer running, as its President. Subsequently, there were disagreements about Gaa's activities in connection with building contracts to the property developer SÜBA, which finally caused Gaa to give up his presidency in September 1982. A commission of inquiry set up by the state parliament, however, certified that Gaa had not acted incorrectly in any way. On September 20, 1982, the state parliament then elected Erich Schneider as his successor. However, Gaa retained his mandate until 1984. The Landtag had elected Gaa in 1969 as a member of the fifth Federal Assembly, which elected Gustav Heinemann as Federal President . Then he decided not to run again for the Landtag. Since then he has devoted himself intensively to his legal work.

In June 2008, 40 years after his first election, Gaa's autobiography, entitled Member of Parliament for All , was his earlier campaign motto, in which he describes his political career as well as important aspects of his life outside of politics.

Awards

Lothar Gaa was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1978 , the Great Cross of Merit in 1982 and the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 1987 .
