Muhterem Aras (born January 2, 1966 in Elmaağaç near Bingöl , Turkey ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) of Kurdish origin. She has been a member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg for the constituency of Stuttgart I since May 2011 and President of the state parliament since May 2016 .

education and profession

Aras was born in Turkey in the eastern Anatolian village of Elmaağaç as the daughter of Alevi Kurds and came to Filderstadt in 1978 with her parents and siblings . After completing secondary school and graduating from high school in Stuttgart at the Johann-Friedrich-von-Cotta-Schule, she then studied economics at the University of Hohenheim . In 2000 she passed the tax advisor exam and founded a tax advisory office with currently twelve employees in Stuttgart.

Political activity

Her political career began in 1992 when she joined the Greens, which she joined because of the attacks on foreigners in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and Mölln . She took on her first mandate after the local elections in 1999 in the Stuttgart municipal council. There she was group leader of her party from 2007 to 2011.

Together with Werner Wölfle at the top, the Greens parliamentary group became the strongest parliamentary group in a German city for the first time in the 2009 local elections .

In the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 2011 , Aras won the first mandate in the constituency of Stuttgart I with 42.5% of the votes cast and thus became the “vote queen” of the Greens in Baden-Württemberg. In 2011, Aras was the first Muslim woman in the Baden-Württemberg state parliament. She was a member of the committees for finance and economy and for culture, youth and sport as well as financial policy spokeswoman for the Green parliamentary group.

Aras is in favor of the right to vote in local elections for migrants without German citizenship.

From 2014 to 2016 Aras was chairwoman of the Stuttgart district association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.

In the state elections in 2016 she ran again in the state constituency of Stuttgart I and won the mandate with 42.4 percent, this time the best result of all state parliament candidates nationwide.

On May 11, 2016, Aras was elected the new President of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament in a secret ballot with the votes of 96 MPs with 39 no votes and 3 abstentions and was thus the first member of the Greens in Germany, the first non-Christian and in Baden-Württemberg the first woman in this office.

In the course of the constitutional referendum in Turkey in 2017 , Aras spoke out in favor of losing the right to vote in your home country after spending ten years abroad.

Private

Muhterem Aras has been married since 1986 and has a son and a daughter. She is of the Alevi faith and lives in Stuttgart.
