Manfred Schäfer (politician)

Manfred Schäfer (born August 17, 1921 in Landsweiler-Reden ; † February 13, 1999 in Saarbrücken ) was a German politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Schäfer was an Air Force officer in World War II , and then an American prisoner of war until 1946. Schäfer studied economics and received his doctorate as Dr. rer. oec. From 1968 to 1970 he was a member of the Advisory Council for the assessment of macroeconomic development ("economic method"). From 1973 to 1984 he was chairman of the board of the Landesbank Saar Girozentrale.

MP

Schäfer was a member of the state parliament in Saarland from 1955 to 1960 . He belonged to the German Bundestag from January 4, 1957, when members of the Saarland were sent to the Bundestag, until the end of the second electoral term.

Public offices

From June 4, 1957, Schäfer was Minister for Finance and Forests of the Saarland in Egon Reinert's cabinet . On February 26, 1959, he also took over the economic department. He initially retained these offices after Reinert's death under his successor Franz-Josef Röder , but left the cabinet on February 9, 1960. After the CDU had won an absolute majority in the state elections in 1970, Schäfer was reappointed Saarland's Minister of Economics on July 13, 1970.
